Jordan was now privy to the information Deke had. How long he had known, and handled the circumstances. She cringed to think how her choices affected his football career. Her actions had succeeded in doing just what she’d tried to avoid. He’d given it all up to search for his baby.
"I'm so sorry, Deke,” she whispered aloud.
Her moment of self-pity came to an abrupt end with a knock at the front door. Deke was back. How could she face him? Better yet, how could he stand to be in the same room with her? She spread the letters on the table. The time had come for the dreaded talk. Only he had some explaining to do, as well.
Jordan dried her eyes, blotted the dampness on her cheeks, and then headed downstairs. Once there, as was her habit, Jordan peered through the slat. On display was the back of a woman’s head. A thick, beautiful, dark-brown braid filled her area of view.
Before her, a young woman, who was dressed in blue jeans and a sleeveless, fuchsia blouse stood on her doorstep. A stuffed knap sack was strapped across her back. Perhaps, she was a student. She turned her head as if interested in activities happening outside the scope of Jordan's view.
From time to time, students stopped to inquire about internships.
Jordan opened the door. "I'm sorry. There aren't any more intern positions available."
The young woman turned slowly to face her. For Jordan, it was like staring in the mirror, and seeing herself many years younger. There was one primary difference, the young woman looked so sweet—her demeanor like pure brown sugar. Almond shaped eyes shone brightly through the rectangular-framed lenses in her glasses. Her dark eyes were filled with brazen curiosity. However, Jordan detected a suggestion of animosity in their depths.
"You look like me," said the young woman. Her girlish voice trembled a little. "But, that's where the likeness ends."
Rather than respond, Jordan committed her child’s every nuance to memory. “A baby girl,” she thought. "I had a daughter?"
