Metal crunched, scraping the quiet from the dark night. ZeLisa lay curled over both seats. The shift jabbed into her abdomen. Airbags wedged her from the waist down as her face smashed into the leather passenger seat. The truck’s diesel engine revved up as if the driver sped away.
Banging commenced outside of her car. The voice moved from one side to the other, and back and forth.
“Dr. Tobias.” She recognized Hank Streeter’s forceful yell. “Open the door.”
His racket finally spurred her to move.
Slowly, and with deliberation, she disengaged her body enough to do as commanded. Strong, guiding hands gripped her upper arms. ZeLisa emerged with a hobbling step, definitely unbalanced. But she was otherwise unhurt. As she exited, her shoulder bag tumbled at her feet. Over the commotion, she heard sirens in the distance. The curious crowd inquired about her condition.
“Are you hurt?” Hank Streeter’s authoritative voice dominated her airspace. His clutch tightened at her unsteadiness. “Asshole fled the scene.”
In the lamplight, she noticed his big, booted feet ground to a pulp the edibles from her purse. ZeLisa allowed him to usher her across the grassy median to the sidewalk. The expression on his face was unreadable in the dim lighting. Yet, his grunt signified a dumbfounded reaction.
Not the least bit concerned about his feelings, she pivoted to look around. “Where’s my shoe?” Overhead light illuminated the funny look he gave her. Even through the cartoonish makeup, she saw his alarmed gaze soften.
“Come on.” He draped an arm around her shoulders to lead her away.
An unusual feeling surged through her body. She felt like he’d swaddled her in a voluminous, cottony cloud. Without a doubt, her mind refuted the instant sense of security that descended over her. A disoriented stagger swung her around. ZeLisa lurched back to the car. “I need my shoe.”
He walked over, and leaned to collect her things off the ground. Another perturbed grunt sounded as he stood, her salvaged purse dangling from his hand. ZeLisa’s awkward step exhibited her unstable equilibrium. His arm clamped around her waist, molding her to his sinewy, strong body. Even though his restraint was evident, she flinched in discomfort and tugged free.
“All you care about is a shoe?” He looked on her from his mighty height. His mouth cocked upward at the corner. “You were nearly killed.”
“I splurged for these shoes!” She stuck out her foot. Suddenly, she clutched her side.
“You need to sit.”
ZeLisa ripped him with a look that said backoff.
“You…need…to…sit.”
She fought as he scooped her to sit in the cradle of his arms.
Who will win this battle? The vet or the fireman?

In front, a lone fire engine hummed on the parking lot. Its occupants appeared to do a sweep to ensure flare-ups remained contained. ZeLisa darted forward. Yellow tape roped the whole building, keeping her barred from entering her condo. A surreptitious look and she fondled the tape, prepared to raise it up.
“I wouldn’t do that, if I were you.”
Bent to sneak beneath, she halted at the voice of caution at her rear.
ZeLisa pivoted to look at Hank. He had shed his outer jacket, and stood in front of her in his suspendered over-pants and boots. The storm in his eyes lessened. She felt a calming effect as he walked over. “This is a salvage expedition, Hank.”
“Do you see those people over there?” He pointed to the crowd surrounding the Red Cross van. “They have that same request, ZeLisa. But, due to safety concerns, the answer is the same. No entry is permitted.”
ZeLisa let the yellow ribbon drop. “Was anyone hurt?” Just saying the word “hurt” reminded her of the discomfort. Baited, she readjusted her broken arm.
“I’m happy to say no. No one was injured.” ZeLisa noted something different in the sound of his voice. A tinge of relief overshadowed the edgy clip it held earlier.
It was cold outside. But Hank’s expression made her swelter. Stammering, she confessed, “I-I’m glad you’re okay.”
He hooked his thumbs in his suspenders, his gaze intense. “What’re you going to do now?”

ZeLisa's Plum Red Dress
Scene: Hank walks in on ZeLisa, causing their temperatures to rise.
ZeLisa took her bags to her room. She looked in the mirror with the clear plastic bag held against her body. She’d chanced the purchases without trying on the dresses. Now wary, she slipped out of her clothes and into one of them. This one was a slinky party dress. “If it wasn’t for the cast,” she bemoaned. With her mouth twisted to the side, she stepped into her new shoes.
A backward look into the mirror confirmed this dress was a perfect fit. ZeLisa posed with her foot extended to approve her selection of footwear. Next, she walked into the hallway to gauge the comfort of the strappy heels. Continuing to the kitchen, she peeked out at Orbit, who remained in the same place. The next thing was to quench her thirst. She tiptoed for a glass from an upper cabinet.
A noise sounded behind her.
Swiveling, she saw Hank—motionless—in the doorway. Then, he strolled over, stretched above her head, and reached her a glass. Their fingers grazed in the exchange. His eyes bore into hers. ZeLisa’s stomach somersaulted. “You’re home early from work.”
“I took some personal time.”
“Oh.”
“New?”
“How can you tell?” A feathery feeling tickled her skin. Hank fingered the price tag under her arm.
“It’s pretty.” He let his hand drift down to hold her hand, the hand holding the glass. “What color is this? Red plum? Whatever. Your luscious skin intensifies the beauty of the dress.”
Steam accumulated in her core, heating her all over. ZeLisa wanted to pull at her neckline. However, that was impossible. The deep plunge would leave nothing to the imagination, if she did. “You’re flirting with me.”
“Naw.” He nipped at her lips in a brazen act. “I’m far beyond that.”
His breath sent shivers through her.
