Tro det eller ej, men jag har faktiskt redan skrivit de två följande böckerna i nästa serie. Har inte visat för mitt förlag än. Ska redigera, putsa och skicka efter sommaren.

Det är sommarlov på Trolldomsakademien, men de tre vännerna Miranda, Orville och Emmi kan inte åka hem. De är inlåsta i skolan! Och den är sig inte lik. Hela huset har förändrats och blivit en mörk och farlig labyrint. Det verkar som om det spökar! Hur ska de komma ut? Det sägs att huset där Trolldomsakademien håller till har en egen själ. Tänk om de aldrig blir utsläppta … Tillsammans med sin lärare Malda och bargesten Briar får de kämpa för att lösa spökslottets gåta.

Fick chansen att testa Wacoms nya flaggskepp. Det här är inte en recension. Istället ska jag lämna er med några betraktelser.

Om du inte har en Cintiq och har en massa pengar över, så är den riplattan det självklara valet då den de facto ersätter 24 tummaren. För många kanske 22 tummaren är ett mer logiskt val (speciellt då den är gjord för att kunna användas ståenders), men det är en modell som är mycket äldre både design- och prismässigt. Vi klyver kanske hår här, men för att 22 tummaren ska fortsätta vara ett attraktivt alternativ så behöver den komma ner i pris rejält. 27 tummaren ger helt enkelt mycket mer för pengarna i nuläget. Och för dig som är proffs och använder en Cintiq varje dag så är frågan kanske inte hur mycket den kostar utan,hur fort du kan få den (eller som i mitt fall: har jag verkligen plats för den).

Till skillnad från 24 tummaren så följer det inte längre med ett stöd. Ingen deal breaker eftersom det går att köpa efteråt och kartongen är både mindre och lättare utan. Nackdelen är att det inte går att vinkla ritplattan i det läge som mer påminner om ett vanligt ritbord. Du måste helt enkelt ha den nästan liggandes platt mot skrivbordet.

Men designen och utförandet år så fantastiskt väl genomför att min i princip helt nya 24HD Touch känns som en relik. Den smarta “fjärren” med knapparna som du kan välja att placera var du vill är ett välkommet tillskott.

The Swedish post office is a fantastic example of how not to do business. One job: Deliver package before 17.00, the day after it was sent. And then this happens again and again and again:

A long journey comes to and end and also a new start. The graphic novel from Sebastian Jones, Darrell May and me has been finished for almost two years. It’s been a labour of love and we’ve poured so much time and energy into this book I cannot believe how many months of my life are within those pages.

The Kickstarter is soon finished and the book was funded within the first days. We reached a couple of stretch goals and there’s still about a week left.

But this is also a fresh start as we begin the journey towards an animated TV series. We have a great team of people in Andrew Cosby (Eureka, Two Guns), Lloyd Levin (Hellboy, Watchmen, The Rocketeer), and Andrew Sugerman (Death Sentence, Conviction, Shopgirl).

We even got Sean Bean to voice our main character.

A couple of weeks ago I travelled to LA for the launch party at Hi De Ho Comics. We had a great time. Our own Niobe from the book – Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games) showed up as well as some surprise guests such as Dana Carvey (Wayne’s World).

Cintiq Companion är en ritplatta med Windows 8.1. I princip är det här samma ritplatta som Wacoms instegsmodell i Cintiq-segmentet, men med en bärbar dator instoppad i den. Fysiskt ser de i princip likadana ut. Den är lite tyngre, har hål för fläktarna osv, men annars märker du ingen skillnad. Om du läser den här recensionen är du förmodligen mest intresserad av vad du kan använda den till och det är inte helt säkert att det här är vad du är ute efter.

Min testversion är någonstans i mitten av de olika konfigurationer som erbjuds med Intel Core i5 med 128GB minne. Wacom säger själva att den här borde vara perfekt för mig. Photoshop gör sig dock icke besvär trots att Wacom på hemsidan till och med rekommenderar den mindre modellen med Core i3 och 64GB SSD.

Jag installerade CC2014 på den och det går på tok för långsamt för att vara användbart för illustratörer. Fläktarna snurrade dessutom på högvarv vilket fick mig att inse att processorn därinne gick på knä och bad om nåd. Efter att ha justerat inställningarna till max prestanda blev det lite bättre, men fortfarande inte tillräckligt bra.

Manga Studio EX däremot fungerade riktigt bra. Prestandamässigt ingen skillnad mot min arbetshäst som är Apples värsta MacBook med extra allt. Däremot lät fläktarna hela tiden, dock inte lika mycket som under Photoshop. Men om du ska rita serier på den här funkar det riktigt bra – om du kan leva med fläktljudet.

Ett program som däremot gick bra utan att fläktarna behövde dra igång var Sketchbook Pro, men det programmet är å andra sidan inte optimerat för den grymt höga upplösningen på skärmen (2,500 x 1,4400 QHD) så allt såg suddigt ut. One Note fungerade också riktigt bra.

Men det här är också en helt vanlig Cintiq. Du kan koppla den till vilken dator som helst och arbeta med den som skärm/ritplatta. Och nu blir det riktigt intressant. För varför ska man snåla och köpa den billigare varianten utan Windows när du för några få tusen extra kan få en bärbar dator och vara helt oberoende av extra utrustning när du t ex är ute och reser? Ja, det skulle vara batteritiden då. Som du kanske redan gissat är den inget att skriva hem om. Utan att ha stressat batterierna kan jag konstatera att du max får ut några timmar av den. Även jämfört med Cintiqs Android-baserade platta får du mer för pengarna med den här då du faktiskt kan köra samma program som du brukar använda.

Om du tänkt använda den som din enda maskin skulle jag satsa på en dyrare modell, kanske i7 med 256GB. Alla modeller har två kameror, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SDXC och MicroSD, tre USB portar, ljud ut och Mini DisplayPort.

Pris 12,499 för Value, 13,999 för Standard, 17,499 för Premium.

Slutsats, om du redan är på jakt efter en Cintiq och vill kunna vara mobil ibland så är det här ett självklart val, men satsa i så fall på den dyrare modellen.

Today at CES, Wacom announced the new 27HD and 27HD touch, both models will replace the previous flagships 24HD and 24HD Touch. They are not cheap at 2199,90 Euro and 2599,90 Euro for the touch version, but will probably be worth it unless you just bought a 24HD.

Wacom also announced the Cintiq® Companion 2 with Windows8. The cheapest version retails for about 1399,99 Euro.

Slow year but too much traveling and work so the list is slimmer than usual.

With two new, both very capable styli, from Wacom, professional artists are asking, which one is better for me?

I won’t go into details since I already have a review out there with just that (and an upcoming review in MacWorld with more information). What I will give you here is to-the-point buying advice.

The Creative Stylus is touted as a pro device, the Fineline isn’t. But with specs so similar it might be down to pressure sensitivity and which device has more levels is there a straight answer?

I think yes, the Creative Stylus is more expensive but has 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity (as opposed to 1024) and the price difference is so slight it doesn’t really matter if you’re a pro. If you live in the Wacom eco system you are more than accustomed to paying premium prices for premium products. Wacom has entry level tablets, and it has professional level tablets. Same with styli now, even if the difference isn’t that big. You might not even notice the extra levels of input. So why go for the more expensive stylus?

The feel of the Creative Stylus is just a little better. It feels more like drawing on an Intuous tablet, less like a toy. And that is not a criticism of the Bamboo stylus. It’s well built and delivers quality so good you have to wonder if Wacom released it just to have a cheaper device? But then again, it doesn’t have the same range of pressure input so for a seasoned pro like yourself, knowing that you’re not using a product that’s “half as good”, might just be the thing.

For some people, like me, having a stylus that looks and feels exactly like the one I use on my Cintiq tablets makes me question less and less why the iPad isn’t my go to device for sketching. Once apps like Procreate are updated the iPad/Creative Stylus will be a very capable combination. Maybe even to the point of making the Cintiq Companion obsolete? It will certainly be cheaper (but not by much). Hey, who knows, with a bigger iPad on the horizon I might actually start using my iPad professionally.

A pressure sensitive stylus with a precise point for your iPad? Could this be it?

I’ll keep this short but sweet. If you are a working artist, you will by now have salivated over various styluses for your iPad to finally be able to take your studio on the road. Or at the very least, do a little sketching while commuting. All of these styluses have claimed to be the be-all and end-all of input devices but. All of them have failed. Yes, all of them. I have tried pretty much every single one that’s available and given up in frustration. Sure, some people actually do use these things professionally. Personally, I’d rather draw with a moist brick than use them ever again.

So, is the Bamboo Stylus Fine Line the answer to your woes? Read on to find out.

To begin with, this thing is sleek and feels almost exactly like a Staedtler Pigment Liner in your hand. For the first time, a stylus that feels like a real pen. But who cares if it can’t perform on the tablet? The iPad registers your finger as input and is designed for that amount of space to be on the screen. All other styluses have had this problem to deal with and have either tried to compensate for – it or give up entirely – presenting you with a big rubber blob at the end of the stylus.

The Fine Line gives you a nice little tip, just under 2mm, resembling a normal pen. It syncs up via Bluetooth to give you pressure sensitivity. And it delivers, registering even the lightest touch. The point is precise. You press down and the line lands right under the tip. But now for the caveat: Only if the app supports it. And right now, only two apps take advantage of it. Yes. Two. Wacom’s own Bamboo app and a PDF app. Damned be Wacom, for they are touting this thing as a PDF markup pen when it can be so much more. There are hints of other apps coming soon, but they are all PDF and note taking apps.

What am I talking about? Well, the technology in the pen needs the app to be compatible for that precise point to work. Otherwise you’ll be presented with an offset of about – you guessed it – a finger tip.

The stylus works beautifully in Bamboo Paper. The Bamboo app is a stunted little app, and users of ProCreate will howl with rage, but it works for now. If you turn off gestures in the iOS settings you can even rest your hand on the tablet. The advantage of that precise point and pressure sensitivity is enough to make this a winner.

If, or rather when, ProCreate support arrives this will be a killer input device. Until then we will have to make do with Bamboo Paper, which works fine. For now.

It’s fairly expensive at just under 700SEK but if you need it, that’s just about what 20 Pigment Liners would set you back.

Should you buy it? Yes, you should. As long as you’re fine with painting in Bamboo Paper.
