It is a thorough compilation of nearly every quote by early-Utah LDS leaders regarding building Zion. I'm re-reading it now I know it's unusual for an author to write a review on his own work. However, most of the text of this book, I did not write. It is a thorough compilation of nearly every quote by early-Utah LDS leaders regarding building Zion. I'm re-reading it now and I still marvel at the clarity and determination they had regarding their role at bringing about a latter-day Zion society -- the type of society God wants his children to enjoy while here on Earth.

The early LDS leaders firmly believed that the Latter-Days Saints were building a City-of-Enoch style Zion society in Utah in preparation for building the Center Stake of Zion. They saw their efforts as a direct fulfillment of the purpose of the Restoration and the fulfillment of the prophesies of old. That effort was halted by the United States government in the mid-1880s, and tragically, we Latter-Day Saints as a people have let their vision die. We are all busy doing something else entirely.

Three reasons why every Latter-Day Saint should read this book:

1. Today, we see "building Zion" in ways that prevent us from actually doing it in the here and now. Most of us see that activity as either:
a. Actively fulfilling our callings,
b. Doing activities in alignment with the current 3-fold mission of the Church, or
c. Building the New Jerusalem when the prophet calls us to do so.
All three are good things, but they are not what the early leaders understood "building Zion" was all about. Reading the hundreds of quotes in this book will make it very clear what "building Zion" actually means.

2. We covenant to build Zion, yet after reading all these quotes, I realized that instead of building Zion, we LDS are actively doing the opposite -- we build Babylon Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, and we have no clue that we are in direct violation of our covenant. No wonder Hugh Nibley was so cynical about us Saints today! Reading this book will make it very clear how to build Zion today (and not Babylon) -- no waiting required.

3. Moses 7 indicates that the New Jerusalem Zion society will be in place when Christ returns. How are we to build it with zero experience and little understanding of how to do it? We live day to day in Babylon, Zion's opposite, smothered in her telestial values, and somehow we are magically going to adjust to life in a Zion society? Seems highly unlikely. The solution? Use the "stepping stone to Zion" that the Brethren taught the Saints would prepare them for life in a Zion society. Read this book to find out what is that crucial "stepping stone to Zion" and how easy it is for us to take that step now. ...more "
