If you're writing about an experience, especially if it's difficult, write what you're able to write at the time, but don't feel compelled to write everything all at once. As time goes on and as you gain distance you'll be able to write more honestly and go deeper. I was looking for a publisher for years, but in some respects my book wasn't ready to be published and I wasn't ready for it to be published. The longer I wrote, the more honest I became with myself and with the world about my experiences. As far as experiencing sexual abuse is concerned, as I began to tell a story that I had been terrified to share with the world, I gained agency in my own life. It took time, almost twelve years from when my children and I were attacked in a parking lot until my book was actually ready to be published. So every year brings new wisdom and just be patient, accept that wisdom. Don't be in a rush to publish, really let your book settle and grow with you.(less)

I don't edit when I write because the two are very different processes. I write in a very free manner, usually with a story already in my head but not a clear idea of how to get from one point to another. I let the story that comes out surprise me. I always schedule a different time to edit. whenever I have writer's block, I don't worry too much. Writing is a process and I don't want to rush it.(less)
