Fiction Friday Excerpt -- Mending the Motocross Champion
Back to Mending the Motocross Champion this week, Book 1 in my proposed Team Macachek Series. Dana and Mac in the hospital. He's just refused pain medication.
“You don’t have to be a hero.”
“I’m not.”
Resigned disbelief replaced her concern, as if to say we’ve been here before. She stood and picked up her bag.
So, she was going to leave. A pain as sharp as the last one and totally unrelated to his injuries momentarily paralyzed him.
Dana started to turn, then hesitated and took a step toward him. She bent and kissed his cheek.
Her lips were soft; her breath warm against his skin. He lifted his good arm to hug her. Too slow. She had already straightened and stepped back.
“Call me when you get home,” he said.
Indecision flickered in her eyes. “I don’t want to wake you. You need your rest.”
“I’ll rest now, so I’ll be awake when you get back to Chenango.”
She still looked uncertain.
“I’ll rest better tonight knowing you got home safely.”
Her expression softened. “Tell you what. I’ll call the nurses’ station and, if you’re awake, I’ll have them transfer me to your phone. If not, I’ll leave a message for you. Okay?”
“Fair enough. Talk to you later.”
“Bye.” She turned and walked out, taking a bit of him with her, as she always had.
He leaned back into the pillows and closed his eyes. Moments later, the hallway speakers jolted him from his semi-sleep. “Paging Dr. Sullivan. Paging Dr. Sullivan.”
He smiled. That’s my girl. Now, Dr. Sullivan had better keep his word. Mac closed his eyes again. The doc had to. Mac had worded his media release very carefully.
