I began writing professionally after some soul searching led me to reflect on where I was in my career and what I really wanted to do. I knew that answer was, write! Soon, I was writing articles for local newspapers and looking for other opportunities. Eventually, I became involved in the issue of grandparents raising their grandchildren and wrote my first book, a non-fiction work, RAISING OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN, which has recently been updated and will be re-released July 2014. My novel, The Forgotten Roses, is a story about choices women face, family, a mystery and a little magic. In addition to Blogging for the Huffington Post, I'm working on a new novel. ...more

The Face of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is an epidemic. But, especially in October, it's all pink and balloons, women smiling in sneakers walking and walking, companies slapping breast cancer logos onto every bit of merchandise under the sun to make an extra buck, and money poured into raising awareness of a disease that one would have to be living under a giant, really deep rock to not be aware of.

“We are all inexorably wound together as individuals, as families, as communities, and as a society. We must take care to value, accommodate, and, at times, assist the variety and diversity, each unique facet, in the noble work - the blessed art - of family.”
Deborah J. Doucette, Raising Our Children's Children

“I had seen a photograph of Sara at two. In it, her hair is platinum and falls around her face in happy disarray. She is dressed in yellow. Babyhood clings to her still and in the sunlight she appears incandescent. She is golden and delicious, sweet as a lemon drop. But her father never asks to see her.”
Deborah J. Doucette, Raising Our Children's Children

“Dear Lord...patch this work. Quilt us together, feather-stitching piece by piece our tag-ends of living, our individual scraps of love”

“I believe in roses. And I believe in putting roses into a vase and sitting the vase on the table. I believe in getting lost and being found, I believe in going barefoot, and in laughter! My religion is to laugh at myself, whenever I can! I believe in the sunlight and in grey skies with big, beautiful clouds!”
C. JoyBell C.

“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”
Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood
