It was an okayish read, even though I think I should've DNF'd it, won't recommend because of graphic violence and swearing. Some scenes felt unnecessarily brutal and graphic, especially the executions at the beginning and the end of the book. Felt ve ...more

This book ruined a good trilogy

Extremely bad world building which leaves many questions unanswered. It feels like poorly written fanfiction, not a published book.

Extremely bad world building which leaves many questions unanswered. It feels like poorly written fanfiction, not a published book.

The story could've either been a duology with Cole giving up his goals for Nikki's happiness, speaking of which, I never understood how Jack escaped the tunnels. This book never answered that. It couldn't have been just that Ever Yours note that saved him. Maybe he was saved because Nikki became a transitional everliving, but someone should've spoken that. Cole should've said something. The third book could've been about Nikki trying to keep Jack on the surface or making a sacrifice to keep Jack on the surface. Or it could've been about the Queen hunting Nikki and Cole doing his best to save her instead of Nikki trying to destroy the Everneath. The queen barely appeared in a few nightmares and wasn't as threatening as she should've been. She didn't even physically show up in Nikki's bedroom. That would've been thrilling to read.

Cole's amnesia ruined the whole book. It sucked to watch Nikki manipulating Cole to destroy his homeland like an antagonist. It almost feels as if the amnesia part really should've been narrated in Cole's POV. It really felt like I was reading the POV of an antagonist. Cole was badass and all in the first two books only to be reduced to a convenient fool in the third one. The way he made Ashe reveal the Shade Network also felt way too weird.

Everything felt too convenient, except maybe the beetles she faced while retrieving the sickle, from a convenient lake that'd give you anything you desired.

RPGs have way better storylines when it comes to taking on something like Everneath. While this story also had 5-6 people trying to change the world, most didn't have magical powers, so it all felt forced. Come on, destroying the world should've been more difficult.

And the way the Dead Elvises died totally ruined my mood. Yeah, they probably deserved it, but I was looking forward to see Nikki rescuing them and them playing some role in the story. Nikki could conjure huge stuff in book two and is pathetic in the third book.

Jack was okay in the first two books but I honestly didn't like him in the third one. Everything felt quite forced and the story wasn't enjoyable at all.

Cole's death scene was beautifully written but I hated how he wasn't himself for most of the book. It also didn't make sense that he trained Nikki to destroy the vault instead of just tricking her into only killing the queen. He felt out of character even when he regained his memories. His death scene was the only time it felt like he wasn't acting out of character.

Nikki is way too weird in book. She says she wants to destroy the Everneath to save future forfeits from ending up in the tunnels, but she also says they aren't innocent because they chose to go to the Feed? Like, why did she have to destroy the Everneath if she didn't want to save the forfeits? She also comes across as selfish when she tells the queen she just wanted to be a mortal, for which she only needed to destroy her own heart instead of the vault of hearts.

This trilogy deserved a way better ending than this.

Was gonna rate it two stars, but adding an extra star just for the line Cole says about remembering Nikki despite forgetting everything, including the band. ...more
