Elizabeth Sellers has loved horses all her life. Born in London, England, she moved to a small village called Cowlinge, near Newmarket in Suffolk, at the age of four. There, to her delight, a local farmer who bred draught horses would allow the diminutive child to sit bareback on these gentle giants.

The Sellers family emigrated to Canada in 1966 on the Russian ship, The Alexander Pushkin. On board the ship were the parents, six children, an Old English Sheepdog, a budgie, 12 suitcases and 24 trunks. The family nearly didn’t make it, as Elizabeth’s father, who was suffering from an injured foot at the time, was taken off at Quebec City by immigration control. Mrs Sellers was forced to pack up the rest of the family very quickly as the ship was due to sail on to Montreal (their original point of embarkation). Surrounded by weeping Russians, Elizabeth’s mother walked down the gangplank in her slippers (she had packed the last of her shoes by mistake), followed by six children, an Old English Sheepdog, a budgie, 12 suitcases and 24 trunks. Nearing the bottom, she was met by her husband coming the other way in a wheelchair that was being pushed by an immigration control employee. They had decided, upon closer investigation, that as Mr Sellers was a court reporter and thus did not need his foot to be operational in order to work, the family could therefore proceed on their way. Back up the gangplank they went; the parents, six children, an Old English Sheepdog, a budgie, 12 suitcases and 24 trunks.
Elizabeth grew up in Ottawa and attended Elmwood School in Rockcliffe Park. Subsequent homes were within the city of Ottawa. For each of her birthdays thereafter she wished for a horse, but never lived where she could keep one. She took riding lessons in Gatineau, Quebec, where her love of horses grew into a passion. She re-emigrated to England after graduating high school (but less dramatically than the trip over!) where she chose to learn to teach riding, which she did whilst living in various parts of England and Scotland.
In 2006 she moved to Knoydart in the Highlands of Scotland (http://www.knoydart-foundation.com/home/) after a traumatic incident in her family life. Knoydart is a peaceful haven in an ever-changing world, with a sense of community that is rare these days. In Knoydart, Elizabeth was given a highland pony called Lavender, and thus finally achieved her life-long wish to have a horse of her own. She also became very involved with many of the residents of the peninsular, and started what became known locally as “The Long Beach Riding Club”. This involved teaching the children of Knoydart to ride, usually on only one or two available riding ponies, and with the help of willing adult volunteers. Elizabeth has taught many children in many different situations how to ride, but never has she found a group more willing, more patient, more interested in learning and kinder to one another than she did on Knoydart. Elizabeth wrote “A Horse With No Name” whilst resident on Knoydart, and the two will be forever connected in her mind. She is hoping to return there in November to include the community in the launch of the book.
Elizabeth currently lives in Ottawa with her two teenage children, a German Shepherd dog called Merewyn and a cat called Merlin. She is currently without a horse of her own once again, but hopes to remedy this very soon.
