I've lived in some creepy old houses with dim hallways and unlit corners, however, and those did lead to a general feeling of unease sometimes about what might be hidden in the darkness. Mostly it was just cockroaches, but that doesn't mean I haven't ever caught myself "whistling past the graveyard" to keep whatever spooks might be there at bay.(less)

But if I intentionally sit down to write, there's a 99 percent chance that words will end up being produced. Whether those words are any good and whether they will be in a significant quantity is a different story.

I chalk this up to having worked for 15 years in the newspaper industry, where reporters don't have the luxury of writer's block. If that 300-word story is due in 45 minutes for the early edition, no self-respecting city editor will tolerate such a diva move, so you learn how to just get it done.(less)

“By the standards of a tourist strolling past looking for a quick lunch, the place was a dive. The sign on the window was small and easy to miss, and the antique feel of the place wasn't the prepackaged, old-shit-on-the-wall nostalgia that came with so many chain restaurants. The cafe was just old, and everything about it said old. But Jon liked it that way, if only because it kept the tourists away and spared him from hearing imported ignorance when there was plenty of local ignorance to go around.”

“The ultimate downfall of the computerized holographic receptionist was that there was no amount of flattery, flirtation or chocolate that could convince one to lie for you.”

Scott Pruden Hey, gang! Thanks so much to everyone who entered the giveaway that ran over the weekend. There were 544 entrants, which completely boggles my mind. I deeply appreciate your interest, and if there are any book bloggers out there who entered but didn't win (or put "Immaculate Deception" on your to-read lists), get in touch with me and let's talk about a possible review! As for the rest of you, please grab a copy of the book anyway and let me know what you thought of it.
