Unfortunately, libraries have limited space and budgets. But many will order books if you request them -- they might be even more inclined if you mention the stories take place in Kentucky. Worth a try.(less)

How did you first get started writing your books? I have had so many tell me I need to write, that I should write and even "do you have any books written I can buy"? which of course, is a real kick in the butt. I have started to write a few times, but..??I found your books and am so enjoying them; went from "The Bruce" right into Isabella's story; and loving it!! (from a former Ohio'an)

I wrote my first novels in secret for many years. Only my husband and kids knew what I was doing. That gave me time to practice, think things through, and develop my voice. Sometimes, once people know you're writing, they ask about when you'll be published and details about the story or writing process itself - things I either didn't know the answer to or wasn't comfortable sharing. Publicly, however, I put myself out there by writing non-fiction articles for dog publications: many of them editorial-type pieces, but another was a study on dog genetics.

Another helpful thing was to join an online critique group. I lucked out and met some very kind and helpful people, but you can also run into well-intentioned but hurtful sorts this way. Just take what resonates for you and ignore what doesn't. Learning how to publish and market is a whole other ball of wax. www.kboards.com is the best place to find that info.

The bottom line is that you have to start somewhere. Write a blog. Write articles. Write scenes. Scheme plots. And read. A lot. Ask yourself what works and what doesn't as you read. Then, just write.

If you really feel the calling to write, do it. Dream big. Put yourself out there when you're ready. Do it because you like the way words sound, the impact they can have, and the ability of stories to transport readers and connect humanity.
