Yugoslav writer of jewish origin. He graduated from the University of Belgrade's Law School and was active as a lawyer since 1935. In 1941, he participated in the resistance fight and after the Second World War he occupied various high political positions in culture or diplomacy, as party-elected official in communist Yugoslavia. He translated Goethe and Chamisso into Serbian.

In 1967, he won prestigious NIN Prize for his novel Mreža (The Net).

In 1978 he was elected as a member of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Language and Literature.
