“In the deepest hour of the night, confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write. And look deep into your heart where it spreads its roots, the answer, and ask yourself, must I write?”

“Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habits; thought is anarchic and lawless, indifferent to authority, careless of the well-tried wisdom of the ages. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid ... Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.”

“You must read, you must persevere, you must sit up nights, you must inquire, and exert the utmost power of your mind. If one way does not lead to the desired meaning, take another; if obstacles arise, then still another; until, if your strength holds out, you will find that clear which at first looked dark.”

I've never heard of "Art and Lies," you'll have to let me know how it is. I also read "Written On the Body," which is supposed to be one of her most highly regarded works. It is great, don't get me wrong, but it is a little more lyrical than narrative, that's the only reason I wasn't all gung-ho into it.

Gotta read that!" I ordered "The Passion" and "Art and Lies" today :) So excited!
Wow you went crazy on the Jeanette Winterson books! What have you read of hers? So far everything I've read has blown me away, at least in terms of her writing - the story itself isn't always the best. She's great.

Great minds think alike :)
Awesome, I will try to get to it as soon as I can! You can always email me or Facebook me and bounce other ideas off me, I imagine it will fuel my own creative energies - already, since talking to you, I have been itching to write and release a lot of pent up emotions.
No bueno! But, I believe that creativity can never be "sapped." Just stifled. You're the only one who can control that. You have to have a balance. To get myself into the habit, I started by setting an alarm on my cell phone and designated that as "writing time." I dropped what I was doing, and did a free writing exercise. Soon I didn't even need the alarm. Ideas started coming to me more often and I couldn't help but write them down.
I'm impressed with your ability to prioritize. I really let writing fall by the wayside and I miss it. But reading is one thing I will never give up. It keeps me sane. There are very few lawyers who even read, which is sad. When my lawyer friends find out that I read all the time they are shocked and think I'm crazy.I should prioritize better like you. I miss my creative side. I used to write music and everything, and all that ended when I started law school. Sapped my creative energy.
Haha. I always say the same thing. "I'm just doing this Office Manager biz until my writing pulls through for me." School and work used to get in the way, but it made me miserable. Now I MAKE time to write and I've never been happier. I'm not sure that I've ever met an attorney who has a true creative side. I'm impressed!
Good taste in books AND music?? I love it.Oh and I just saw your other comment...I haven't written in years but I used to. Alas, school and work got in the way. Now I write constantly but not for fun (I'm almost admitted to NYS as a lawyer). I always say if the lawyer thing falls through I'll move to a secluded cabin and just write.

That's what the site is good for - I would not have discovered half of them were it not for suggestions on here! I'm sure not all of them are that great, but if you like good writing start with Jeanette Winterson. I love her.
