She followed him along a beautifully tiled pathway. To one side, blooming hibiscus lent a shock of color to the crisp landscape. On the other, plush loungers surrounded a deep blue pool with what appeared to be a swim-up bar. Unmanned, of course, since the place hadn’t yet opened to the public. She could use a drink.

The room to which he led her appeared to be a cabana-style suite. The outside was starkly modern luxe, the full glass walls on the ocean side allowing an endless view of the water. An expansive open-air patio under a permanent roof hosted an entire living room set, complete with loungers and a private pool just steps from the Caribbean. Even through the glass, she could tell the kitchen, with its white cabinetry and gleaming gray stone countertops, would be completely at ease in a luxury apartment.

It wasn’t until he opened the door for her that she realized something was wrong.

The room—which hadn’t been locked—appeared…lived in. Not a mess by any means, but there were a couple of rinsed dishes in the sink. A mug on the coffee table. Shoes on the floor.

Men’s shoes.

Where her mouth didn’t form words, her expression must have spoken volumes.

His lips twitched. “Your room is the one to the right. If your driver wants to keep his job, the rest of your bags are already inside.”

“My room?”

He straightened, all mass and muscle and sex appeal. He stared at her, one corner of his mouth upturned as if he found something funny. The Ryder she had watched through her bedroom window had never found anything funny. Not ever. He wore a scowl like no man’s business, but a smile? He’d be devastating in a smile.

Don’t go there.

“You weren’t expecting a room?”

Expectations. The thought took her in a direction she thought she had long left behind. One in which she had stared into those exquisitely blue-green eyes and had begged with every star in the sky for him to want her.

She tore her gaze from his lips. “I didn’t realize I’d be sharing.”

“I hate to break it to you, princess, but most of the rooms aren’t finished for a few days yet and are in the process of being painted. You can either asphyxiate on paint fumes, bunk with the guys in the staff quarters, or you can stay here.” His expression softened. “For what it’s worth, you have your own bathroom, and the locks are fully functional. You’ll have your privacy, and I don’t bite.”

“You?” She nearly swallowed her tongue. Aside the fact she had spent countless hours fantasizing about his teeth on her skin, and she had rather hoped he did bite, there was the very small matter of proximity. And that he had just indicated he would be a presence in hers. “I was under the impression I would be…working directly with the owner.” She had nearly forgotten her cover as an interior consultant. After ten years apart, the man managed to unravel her in minutes.

His lips formed a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Was he as tormented as she? She doubted it, but it was a nice thought. “You can work as closely with the owner as you would like,” he said. “But if you want me out of here, you’ll be sorely disappointed.”

Great. “Are you his…assistant?”

He smiled, all languid and sated. Post-coital. “No, sweetheart. I’m him.”

Rumor has it that authors are supposed to live glamorous lives. Yeah, so I don’t know where THEY live, but my pre-release weekend went like this:

1. Stare at computer approximately 40 of 48 weekend hours because this book I’m working on got tired of kicking my butt and is now kicking me in the face.

2. Endure the first true all-nighter of my life. A whole 25 hours without sleep, followed by a four hour nap. But the kids let me sleep the ENTIRE four hours, so there was that.

3. Get the mail. Drop it twice, because #tired. (Sidenote: OMG LOOK. My LLR leggings with hogs on them came today. I only got them to horrify my teen boys, who raise hogs, but the pattern is actually insanely adorable in person and if it ever drops below 95 degrees I am SO rocking these babies.)

4. Those edits I stayed up all night to do? Fifteen minutes after I woke from my nap, they were back in my inbox. If I weren’t so tired I’d be LMAO.

5. Currently throwing copious amounts of confetti, because HELLO, RELEASE DAY! Liam is here, and in typical Chase Brothers fashion, everything that can go wrong, will. Hilariously. Check it out!

He shot her a sideways look that backfired. Instead of getting his are you kidding me message across, he found himself drowning in an endless sea of blue.

He would have been content to drift there if not for the raccoon’s nasty hissing, so astutely fierce that it almost sounded like a joke. But Liam knew a raccoon could tear a person up. One thing he hadn’t rescued from his truck was a first aid kit, and along with his intention of keeping his appendages to himself, he wanted them intact. Which meant not sharing space with wild, angry animals. “Maybe you could lock it to keep raccoons out. I don’t know…that might be a start.”

She glared. “Because I absolutely expected this to happen.” The raccoon stared, less defensive now, then oh-so-epically-casually climbed first to a stool, and then to the counter, then ripped into a candy bar that had been lying there.

“Do you see that?” Claire said, edging to stand beside him. “He’s sitting there on his haunches looking me in the eye while he eats my chocolate.”

“The door isn’t open,” Liam said, trying damned hard not to sound amused. “Do they open and close doors? Is this the politest raccoon of all time?”

“No, I don’t think he is,” she said, turning toward Liam to give him an indignant stare. “Because as I previously mentioned, he’s staring right at me as he steals my food.”

Liam was sorely lacking in a smartass reply, probably because when she’d looked at him, her face tipped toward up his, he didn’t see the annoyance. He saw a delectably expressive mouth, and he wanted to taste it.

Probably as much as she wanted her chocolate.

He squashed the thought, grabbed the condom, and was buried between her thighs before the second thoughts hit. He rolled into her, feeling raw and wild as he surged deep inside her while she tore at the sheets, fisting them again and again. His name was a plea on her lips, her body a torrent of surrender when he planted his hands on either side of her head and drove hard, rocking the bed against the wall while she begged for more. Begged for harder. He didn’t know anything like it. Never had. And when she shuddered and seized beneath him, she took him with her, pleasure exploding into bright points of light that left him dizzy and lost.

Lost. Yeah, there was a word for it.

He managed to fall to the side, sweat drenched, chest heaving, world turned upside down. Again. His lips stung with her kisses, and his blood ran like hell through his veins.

He could chase that feeling every day for the rest of his life.

“I get it,” he said. “I get why you’re leaving.”

She turned her head and, looking at him across the pillow, smiled, so soft and sweet he ached inside. Then she curled her fingers around his and ripped out his heart.

“My mother?” she asked with a grin.

“No. The rush. The freedom. I envy you, you know. The world is yours, and I don’t think you’re afraid of anything.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m not afraid.”

“But you know you’ll be okay.” And wasn’t that the damned difference? He squeezed her hand, then extricated himself from her touch and then her bed. She stared openly while he dressed, never once asking him to stay. That was who she was, though, and whether or not he appreciated it, he got it.

Not that it mattered.

She had a flight to catch.

He’d be better off to stop worrying about her and start figuring out how to get through the gala. Once that was over, he could go back to his safe, normal life. The one without the quirky, car-kicking brunette with the scary clown pajamas.

He’d be able to breathe again.
