Amber Daulton in the Hot Seat

Author Interview Questions
Janice Seagraves: Hello, Amber Daulton. Welcome to my website. Let’s get to it. What kind of research did you do for Lost in His Spiderwebs? Did you travel, use the Internet, speak with experts on a topic, etc?
Amber Daulton: Ah, travel… If only I had the means to do so for first-hand research. The people who can afford that are lucky indeed. No, I’m like most people and used the Internet for all my research needs. From Mexican culture, cuisine, clothing, geography, flora and fauna, real-life locations my characters visited, crime activity, and so much more, I found everything I needed in travel blogs, articles, Wiki, and even government crime reports. There are also lots of walk-about videos on YouTube where travelers walk around a city, showing you the sights and explaining the cultural significance. That was very educational and an eye-opener to what the cities/locations really look like today.
Janice Seagraves: Do any of your characters take over and write the book themselves sometimes? Who?
Amber Daulton: That’s been the case for several books, but not so much this time around. I plotted everything out, scene by scene, chapter by chapter, and the characters stayed within those parameters most of the time. I actually had to cut quite a few scenes because my expected word count was off-the-charts crazy, so the last thing I needed was for Drina or Rubén to decide they were taking the story in a new direction.
Janice Seagraves: What do you prefer: ebook or print? Why?
Amber Daulton: I prefer print, but they take up a lot of room, and my office space is limited. Plus, I read mostly indie or small press books (occasionally trad), so finding and buying paperbacks isn’t often feasible. That stated, there are over 1000 ebooks on my e-reader, and the number keeps growing.
Drina, the heroine from Lost in His Spiderwebs, is an editor for a publishing company. She LOVES books, especially spicy romance, as she tells Rubén one evening while in bed. I’m sure she would agree with me that as long as a reader is reading and enjoying the book, then it doesn’t matter the format. Just read, people!
Janice Seagraves: How long have you been writing? When did you decide to become an author?
Amber Daulton: At age 12, I wrote my first romance book with a pencil in a spiral-bound notebook. It clocked in at 200-some pages and took me six months to complete. That’s when the author bug bit me. I kept dreaming up stories, writing them down, and reading every romance book I could find.
At 26, I contracted my first book with a small press. Now, it’s over ten years later, and the rights to all my small press-published books have reverted to me.
Lost in His Spiderwebs is a brand new novel that I’m releasing through my imprint, Daulton Publishing. To date, it’s my twentieth publication. That’s right! I’ve finally reached the big 2-0! It’s a thrilling, humbling experience.
Janice Seagraves: Will you tell us a bit about the Lozano Cartel series?
Amber Daulton: Sure. I’d be glad to.
The truth is, I never intended to write it. The Lozano Cartel is a standalone dark romance spin-off from the romantic suspense series, Arresting Onyx. The first cartel book, Dark Hearts Aflame, was supposed to be the final Onyx book, but it just didn’t fit. The story took place in a different country, the characters were darker and more troubled, and the overall flow didn’t match reader expectations for romantic suspense. I realized I needed to create a spin-off, or trash Dark Hearts Aflame. Let me tell ya, I was never gonna trash that book. Of everything I’ve ever written, it’s my FAVORITE. So the Lozano crime family was born. There are three siblings, a cousin, an uncle, and some wonderful friends who are now in need of an erotically charged happily ever after.
Dark Hearts Aflame follows runaway cartel princess, Carmen Lozano, and her man, American fugitive and former drug lord, Bristol Rieger.
Lost in His Spiderwebs tells the story of the newly minted cartel kingpin, Rubén Lozano, and the woman he rescues (ahem—buys) from a rival cartel, his ex-lover, Drina Cabrera.
Janice Seagraves: So that’s two siblings down. What’s next?
Amber Daulton: Corrupting His Wife has broken the pattern. No Lozano sibling finds love in this book. It focuses on Rubén’s best friend, Enrique, who rescues (ahem—kidnaps) a bride before her wedding to a ruthless capo. Yeah, I’m having to clear my throat a lot with this answer. As I said before, the Lozano Cartel books are dark romance, which means the heroes are anti-heroes who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
More stories are to come. I can’t wait until I’m ready to share them with you!
Janice Seagraves: Sounds great! Where can we find your release?
Amber Daulton: Lost in His Spiderwebs is now on preorder and will be live on October 14, 2025. Please subscribe to my newsletter or follow my social media to keep tabs on all the upcoming release dates. Until then, add Lost in His Spiderwebs to your reading list. You won’t be disappointed.

EXCERPT – CLEAN
“Smile,” Rubén told her. “It’s showtime.”
She nodded and lifted her chin, wincing a little in the flashing camera lights.
As three hand-picked paparazzi snapped pictures of him and Drina from all angles, Rubén counted to thirty before he steered Drina past them to the music room.
“Wow,” Drina murmured as they passed the piano for the ballroom.
A massive chandelier gleamed from the lofty ceiling, its decorative crystals reflecting the soft white light and dancing spots across the ivory walls and the chattering, laughing guests. The live band played instrumental music at the far end of the rectangular room, where Esme’s team had set up fancy tables and chairs for the speech and dinner portion of the evening.
“Why do you keep this room locked up? It’s magnificent.”
He shrugged. “It’s a bitch to clean.”
His blunt answer steepled Drina’s eyebrows. “My, what consideration. I’m sure the housekeeping staff appreciates it,” she teased and pulled him onto the dance floor alongside several other couples. “Let’s dance.”
As her arms slid around his shoulders, he rested his hands on her waist. Her body heat and strawberry aroma enveloped him. Groaning, he gripped the thick fabric of her dress so hard that it bunched and the band of his rings bit into his skin. She rested her head against his chest, and her hair teased his nose. They swayed, lost in each other as though they were the only people around. A foolish notion, one he shouldn’t revel in. If he did, he would ravage her on the floor.
“You have a good turnout,” she murmured while he twirled her about. She spun back into his embrace. “Are any of these people your friends?”
“Hardly.” This was his world. Glamour, power, prestige. The public mask he wore to hide his sinister nature. “You’re swimming in dangerous waters. The sooner you realize I can buy and discard all these sharks and guppies with a flick of my wrist, the better off you’ll be.”
“I’m well aware you’re king of the sharks.”
He snorted, holding her closer. “You’re a barracuda. Lithe grace and sharp teeth.”
“Ooh, I like that.” She nipped at his chin. “I’ll never be a guppy.”
Damn right. As the song ended, he guided her off the dance floor. Duty called.
