For twenty years, I was the coordinator of an annual camp for children based around The Chronicles of Narnia. That experience shaped a lot of my thinking about how readers enjoy fantasy.

Like CS Lewis, my fantasy story Many-Coloured Realm began with a picture in my mind's eye: a boy without arms floating in a field of stars and faced with an impossible choice.

My non-fiction series beginning with God's Poetry can be traced back to the observation that Lewis comes from the Welsh word for lion. The discovery of name covenants led to the discovery of threshold covenants, as well as many other long-forgotten asp

But then, I found this awesome art by Ted Larson, depicting one of the cherubim in Ezekiel's vision. So that was it. Now - whether it attracts a potential reader - I'm not so sure. The reaction has generally been 'Huh?' No one recognises what the image is meant to portray. From feedback, women readers really like the floral covers, but I'm tending myself to see them as a little too subtle as regards "messaging" about the contents. (less)

But I hope my books are going to be around for a long, long time. So I also look to a style that I hope won't date in a few years and try to match the contents to that. I have noticed in talking to readers that they aren't really interested in trends. They like what they like - and that's generally an arresting cover which draws them to pick up the book and check out the back cover blurb. (less)

“Take a good long look at The Lord’s Prayer. It’s all ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’. There is no ‘me’, ‘I’ or ‘mine’ anywhere.”
Anne Hamilton, God's Poetry: The Identity and Destiny Encoded In Your Name

“Shadow is Light’s child. It is nothing without the Light, and nothing if it falls into Darkness.”
Anne Hamilton, Many-Coloured Realm

“Throughout the ancient world, naming was a sacred act. It was the word by which a child was called into his calling. It was the voice of destiny, summoning the child into his future with all its glorious promise.”
Anne Hamilton, God's Panoply: The Armour of God and the Kiss of Heaven

Topics Mentioning This Author

“...to limit the meaning of Aslan simply to lion from Turkish is to miss its deep northern resonances and the song of the snowflakes whirling around it. Lewis admitted that, as a boy, he had been ‘crazed by northern–ness’ and there are many subtle references to Norse mythology in the story.
In fact, if we treat Aslan as a word from Old Norse, it simply means god of the land. By combining that meaning with Turkish lion, it is essentially cognate which Welsh, Llew, lion, the very word from which the name Lewis is derived.”
Anne Hamilton

“To lift up the hands in prayer gives God glory, but a man with a dungfork in his hand, a woman with a slop pail, give Him glory, too. God is so great that all things give Him glory if you mean that they should.”
Gerard Manley Hopkins

“To do the useful thing, to say the courageous thing, to contemplate the beautiful thing: that is enough for one man's life.”
T.S. Eliot, The Use of Poetry and the Use of Criticism

“A book, too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”
Madeleine L'Engle

“The Piper's playing again, and there's a full orchestra.'

There was a long silence as Andrew deciphered the cryptic statement. 'A FULL orchestra?”
D.J. Stutley
