Chris,

I'm very sensitive to the age of my readers, and try to write books with situations and language that is appropriate for them; that doesn't mean I won't use challenging words, for example, but I will make sure they are in a context where the meaning can be construed. For jokes and humor, that means writing something my readers will "get" (so, for example, I'll avoid a political joke), and creating scary scenes that may be disturbing, but won't create nightmares. I don't necessarily try to create a "balance," though. I just write something that is true to the characters and my vision. I think the "balance" is instinctual. (less)

Those would make chilling tales, although none were created by wizardry spells. Perhaps you should be the one who writes the wizardry were-chicken novel. Why not? I wanted to combine something fierce (a werewolf) with a creature that was not known to be fierce (a penguin). I suppose I could have chosen a different creature, but a penguin felt perfect. (less)

“I could write about how minks wanted to make the world a better place. I could write about how he never gave up, even when he failed...........That's what made Mr. Minks so wondertastic. He never stopped trying. He didn't let one setback keep him down. I think that's a great lesson for everyone.”
