Then, I'll just start writing something - anything - to get words on the page. Sometimes the words come right away but if they don't, then I know it doesn't really matter how I begin - just that I begin. I can come back later and scrap or rework the shoddy beginning if needs be, but I find that once you start writing, it gets easier as you go along.

Midway through writing a book or short story, if I get 'stuck', I'll just tease out plot ideas on my walks, or put it aside and go and read something. Reading definitely inspires my writing. I can be reading something totally unrelated to my own work but just getting that break and reading someone else's words can help.(less)

Fantasy fiction also allows for great metaphorical writing, I think, and I do love conjuring up magical landscapes and scenarios, and describing them in a way which hopefully brings them to life for the reader.

Having people read your work - and enjoy it - is also a pretty amazing thing about being a writer. You always fret that readers may not like what you've written and, while of course not everyone will, it's priceless to get positive feedback on something you've put such a lot of work into. (less)
