Rachel grew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where she spent summers checking out very tall stacks of books from the library. She became interested in Sweden and the Swedish language early on, and majored in Scandinavian Studies as an undergraduate at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. She spent a college semester abroad in Gothenburg, Sweden. After a few years off, she returned to school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to get her MA and PhD, also in Scandinavian Studies.

I'm not sure why "The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden" was chosen as the title--as a translator, I hardly ever choose titles! That's a decision made by the publisher. I wonder if it's because "The Illiterate Who Was Good at Math" or similar, while intriguing, sounds rather clunky, and because titles starting with "The Girl Who" and similar have been quite popular of late. But that's all speculation. Thanks for your question, though!(less)

Often when a translation is published both in the UK and US (or Canada, Australia, etc) it is edited/localized for each territory. If I'm translating something I know will be published first in the US I'll usually change kilometers to miles and so on, especially because I am a speaker of American English myself. Then I leave it up to the team in the UK (or wherever) to edit those things as they see fit for their version. But if I'm doing a sample translation and don't know where the book might end up being published first, I'll typically leave all the measurements as is. (less)
