Chasing Someone Else’s Dreams

The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want. – Ben Stein

question-mark1

While this sounds like a simple thing, sometimes it can be much harder than we think. In order to figure out what we want, we have to get past everything the world is trying to tell us we need. Every day we’re bombarded with advertisements telling us we need this product or that product in order to be happy (or cool, or popular, or complete, or whatever). We hear “experts” tel...

How Do You Do It?

What is fiction? How do you write it?

People often ask me how I come up with ideas for stories. They tell me, “I could never do that.” To which I politely reply: “Baloney.”

Coming up with a story idea is the easiest thing in the world. Fiction, at its most basic, is simply asking the question “What if…” and then answering it. In fact, you probably do this all the time without realizing it.

When you have indigestion and wonder, What if I’d had the fish instead of the steak? that’s a “wha...

Casting Call

So, just for fun, I like to imagine who I would cast in a movie adaptation of the Far Land Trilogy. I thought I’d share my imaginary list with you here. My choices are based upon past roles they’ve played, character mannerisms and attitudes of the characters in some of the roles, interviews I’ve seen them in and some other miscellaneous factors. Where two actors are listed, the first is my dream choice but I’d be happy with the second also. In some, I don’t have a specific actor chosen. Inst...

An interview with Author G. David Walker

Interviews are where I talk about myself more than I ever would in person. 😉

G. David Walker

G. David Walker was unexpectedly born in Ulysses, Kansas on a bright, sunny morning in July of 1963, the youngest of four brothers and one sister. As the internet had not yet been invented when David was a young man, he instead devoured any science fiction or fantasy book that he could get his hands on, dreaming of different worlds, fantastical creatures and strange, ...

In Progress

Here’s a taste of my current work in progress. Potential titles are “Beleryn” or “Three-Blood Prince.” It’s an urban fantasy involving primarily Celtic mythology and the Fae Courts. This is Chapter One. Let me know if it catches your attention.

J.D. pulled his hood tighter around his face, trying to protect his cheeks from the freezing rain stinging his skin like tiny needles of ice. A bitter wind poked frozen fingers into every tiny opening in his coat it could find, chilling e...

The Things We Hide

I turned 58 years old today, so I figured this was as good a time as any to tell you a little more about myself. This time, however, it won’t be anything I’m proud of. Today, I’m going to tell you about what I’m most ashamed of in my life as well as my greatest fear (not surprisingly, the two are related). My greatest shame, and this has been true since elementary school: my teeth. And, to go along with that, my greatest fear (narrowly beating out giant, hairy spiders) is going to the de...

Dreams Don’t Always Come True

Wow. That’s a depressing title for a blog entry, right? Don’t worry. It’s not as bad as you think. Just hear me out.

I was doing my penance….er, laps…on the treadmill tonight (Did I mention I have a reunion coming up?) when I had a revelation. I was listening to the songs of my youth, a YouTube mix of 80s music, some of which I used to play with a band back in “the day.” I’ve mentioned it before (if you’re interested, it’s here), but when I was in my 20s, I lived in Vegas for a few years ...

How Do You Build a Muscle?

I was thinking about this the other day while I was working out (Got a high school reunion coming up, dontcha know). The way you build muscle is to subject it to resistance. Of course, there are different ways of doing this. You can use weights, you can use resistance bands. If you don’t have either of those and don’t want to go to the gym, you can use your own body weight or things around the house. If you want to build muscles in your legs, you could go for walks, especially up hills. In that ...
