He is the author of 15 Paul Zacher mysteries, (The Murder in México series), set in the old colonial hill town of San Miguel de Allende, as well as his three award-winning nonfiction accounts of the expatriate experience, San Miguel de Allende: A Place in the Heart, Into the Heart of Mexico: Expatriates Find Themselves Off the Beaten Path, and Living in San Miguel: The Heart of the Matter. The best answer is that what you are writing is not about you, it's about the subject and your treatment of it. Block is about your fear of failure, freezing up, it's only about yourself. I would focus on the current line, the current paragraph. Write one word. Fix it if it can be improved upon, then write the next. That's your TOTAL focus. Stop thinking of in terms of being and think in terms of doing. When people ask me what I do, I never say I'm a writer, I say I'm writing a mystery set in the horse country here in Mexico. (Or whatever the subject is.)(less)

Writing gives me total freedom of choice, of writing and managing my 22 books, and of promoting them the best way I can. Freedom involves taking responsibility for what you do, because only if you own them can you learn from your mistakes.(less)

What’s in a Name?

What’s in a Name?   One steamy afternoon a few years ago I was riding through Cairo with a driver. Even though I drive all over México, I’m not sure I would drive in that huge city. We were moving along at six cars abreast on a four lane street. I had arrived the previous […] Read more of this blog post »

“I am all of my characters, but none of them in particular. I'm an expat in San Miguel de Allende, the community I write about.
My characters are never black and white--I'm interested in shades of gray and the way people rationalize the bad acts they commit.”
