I recently moved to upstate NY after spending 45 years living in GA. It's been an adjustment to say the least, but I'm enjoying it. I live in an apartment with my wife and couple of cats. I'm a computer programmer by day and a writer only on occasion these days. I have several novels in various stages waiting for me to finish. One day I hope to have them published. In the meantime, I hope people enjoy the few books that've managed to escape my clutches and live out in the world. ...more

I wouldn't say Lewis Grizzard was one of my influences, although I did read some of his books when I was younger as well as his newspaper column. I enjoyed Lewis Grizzard's writing, finding him very funny. However, writing humor or satire isn't something I think I do well.

In my opinion, a good writer is someone who captivates the reader and makes him/her care about the characters and what happens to them. As the reader enjoys the story, they should be completely unaware of the writer who created it.

I wrote my first book back in 2005 after reading Stephen King's book about writing. He made it sound so easy, so I decided I would take his advice and sit down every day to write a thousand words. I came up with an idea for a horror novel and watched it play out in my head as I sat down to write. After three months of doing this every day, I had written my first book. It was called "The Shadowpeople", but it never was published. I rewrote it three times since then and have plans to rewrite it once again. Also, I changed the name of it to "The Consuming Darkness". Hopefully, it will reach bookshelves in 2017 or maybe 2018 (it's hard to tell).

I haven't taken ideas for books from people I've talked with. Mainly because I only know two other writers and don't discuss my ideas with others until I've already started working on them. My book ideas (and I think this might be true for most writers) generally come from small things that happen in daily life.

What is the best town that I write about? Hmm. That's tough. Most of my stories take place in Georgia since that's where I live. Stephen King mainly writes about Maine because that's where he lives and so many writers have written about New York City or Los Angeles. I don't want to write about those places because I don't feel like copying other writers. Instead, I mainly choose to stick with my home state because it's easier to place my stories in familiar settings. However, I will set a story in a different location if it fits the story. I've written about Rome, Kingston, Doraville, Athens, and Atlanta. I've also written a story called "Carniville" that is set in Florida. I have a book coming out this year that takes place in Roswell, New Mexico.

I hope that answers your questions and gives you insight into my work. Thanks so much for the questions.

This is usually due to encountering a roadblock in the story that I failed to see coming and I'm at a loss about how to circumnavigate it. In this case, I usually work on one of the many other stories I've been plugging away at. When I make these transitions, I typically can come back to the story where I was "blocked" with a clear head and easily see a reasonable way around it that doesn't break the story. From there, the story will continue to flow again. Not to mention, it helps me write several books in a shorter period of time because I'm almost always working on one, inching each one toward publication.(less)

The Magic...It's Happening...Again!

Hello, Void. It's me again. This writer who won't give up. Won't stop quacking into the vast nothingness in this nook of the internet. After my one past last year, I decided to drop another update for 2018. Will this be like last year and be a single post for the year? Probably. But I hope not, because I come bearing some news!

First, let me say that I'm now a New Yorker. I spent forty-six years li Read more of this blog post »

“It was difficult for Caleb to eat the remains of a horse he had named and used to ride; almost like eating family.”
J.R. McLemore, Negative Spaces

“Dunes slithered slowly across the landscape like ravenous parasites, leeching the plants of their nutrients, leaving behind withered husks. The sand rode the wind currents, swirling like dervishes. The worst, though, were the monster wind storms that raked the land, prefaced by a wall of sand reaching a mile or so into the sky, bringing the blackness of night.”

“We offered up our son. We got back a flag.”
