Lee Carlson is an author, journalist, and Zen practitioner whose life and work have been shaped by recovery, resilience, and a relentless search for meaning. A survivor of traumatic brain injury, his acclaimed memoir "Passage to Nirvana" chronicled his journey from near death to healing, guided by writing, sailing, and Zen. The book became a grassroots success, connecting with readers across the U.S. and internationally—from Hamptons bookshops to missionary circles in Indonesia. I was on deadline putting the finishing touches on my new book, “A Single Excellent Night,” so reading, rereading, editing, rewriting, editing again, and again, took up most of my time, but I did manage to sneak in some summer reading. I read “Jaws” for the first time, since it was the 50th anniversary of the movie and I had never read the book (loved the movie). Good beach reading, lol. On a more serious note, I read a new translation of "The Odyssey" that was getting rave reviews, and loved it. I also read two books by Randy Wayne White, “The Man Who Invented Florida” and “Tomlinson’s Wake,” both part of his Doc Ford series of spy/detective novels. Not great literature but a guilty pleasure set mainly in Southwest Florida, where I was partly raised and have lived on and off over the years. Also several spy novels by Daniel Silva in the Gabriele Allon series (a very engaging, good writer). Pico Ayer’s “Flame, Living with Silence,” and a few books of Zen philosophy. Phew, guess I read more than I thought this summer. 😎(less)

Did I solve the puzzle? No spoiler alerts, you’ll have to read the book to find out. All I can tell you is that within 48 hours of publication it was already the #1 Best Seller on Amazon in the category “Zen Philosophy.” 🎉🙏(less)
