"Burgess’ second novel in this trilogy was just as good as the first. It’s like taking a trip in time to Colonial Malaya. "

"Burgess’ prose is so uniquely absorbing. Just as in 'Time for a Tiger', the writing so elegantly transports you, even infuses you, into this world. Maybe it helped that I read parts 1 and 2 of the Malayan trilogy during the summertime, but the heat, "

"The second book in the Malayan trilogy is funnier and less corpulent with Malayan terminology than the opener Time for a Tiger. The female characters also flourish in this instalment. Full review for the trilogy itself coming up in a day or so. Patie"

An honest rating is all I ask. I myself give different ratings, sometimes, on Goodreads and Amazon. There's a lot more grade inflation at Amazon. But Goodreads is for people who are serious about reading, so I try to be honest. 3 stars = "I liked it" 4 = "I really liked it", etc. This seems like a good system to me. So if I get a 3 star review here I'm generally happy (though of course I prefer 5-stars).Peter wrote: "You should probably bump all my ratings by a star or a star and a half to make them compare with other people's ratings. You should probably bump all my ratings by a star or a star and a half to make them compare with other people's ratings. I doubt that I've given 50 books (of the 50,000 or so that I've read in my 73 years) a five star rating. Four is a raving good review and three means I liked it quite a lot. I don't rate many books that I dislike because I tend not to read them.
Riku wrote: "Got to tell you: that was one of the best responses yet to my prompt question. Thanks for looking me up!"I am certainly glad to hear that my answer did not disappoint, although I must confess I don't recall either the prompt question or what I wrote in response ;^)

Got to tell you: that was one of the best responses yet to my prompt question. Thanks for looking me up!
I still don't "get" the Goodreads Author/Non-Author account mechanics. Evidently I'm logged in as John Sundman the person, friend of John Sundman, the author. I thought I had merged them into one account. Oh well, I'll figure it out. Furthermore, having been Director of Quality at Zola Books (which you should check out), I'm sympathetic to the problem of how to implement two kinds of accounts, people with the same name with different privileges, "regular users" who get transubstantiated in to "authors", etc. We had a hell of a time of it, but I believe it's finally working right.
So, my Goodreads account(s) definitely not yet set up the way I want them (it), but it will be eventually (he said confidently).
Just read a ton of comments rubbishing Ginsberg's 'Howl'. "Only arrogant hipster drunks think it great poetry." OK then
Cool beans. I shall look forward to reading your reviews (you seem to be a bit more generous than I am). And thanks for your note!
