I attended suburban Atlanta public schools before earning a BA in History from Davidson College in Davidson, NC and an MA in Journalism from the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia at Athens, GA. However, like many refugees from the liberal arts, I then moved into the computer field.

A native of Nashville, TN, I lived in Atlanta from the age of three, not counting out-of-state college, until I moved to Memphis to take a contract computer job on the notorious "Y2K Problem" in the spring of 1999. Having saved the world from disaster (with a little help from thousands of other computer professionals all around the world), I moved from Memphis to Raleigh in the fall of 2000 and worked for the city government. On April 7

(B) you suddenly spot an immense plot hole, and you don't know how to fix it. (C) you gradually or suddenly find yourself bored with this particular project. But the remedy is always the same. Go do something else creative. If you have a talent for crafts, such as jewelry-making or costuming, do that. I'm not blessed with either of those, so when I put my own work aside, I write fan fiction or make notes for future writing projects. Eventually, you'll get your mojo back. (less)

Why Write Dystopian Fiction?

Why write dystopian fiction? Why write about an imaginary culture were everything has gone wrong and all the good things have been taken away? Isn’t it very depressing? I get asked this a lot.

I have my reasons. I’ve loved dystopian fiction ever since I read George Orwell’s 1984 when I was thirteen, and didn’t fully understand what Winston and Julia were doing in that room for rentabove Mr. Charri

“Now I now understand what I was fightin’ for, Zel. I was fightin’ for a world where I’m free to try some things out, and find out what I really want. I’m fightin’ for a world where people can be honest with each other. That even includes the people who can’t be honest with others. People like me.”
Betty Cross, Discarded Faces

“The greedy bastard, thought Weintî. He knows perfectly well that twenty shekels is the going rate for a female household slave of my age.”
Betty Cross, Mistress of the Topaz

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde

“You don't love someone for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.”
oscar wilde

“Choose your leaders
with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward
is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool
is to be led
by the opportunists
who control the fool.
To be led by a thief
is to offer up
your most precious treasures
to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask
to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant
is to sell yourself
and those you love
into slavery.”
Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Talents

“Beware:
At war
Or at peace,
More people die
Of unenlightened self-interest
Than of any other disease.”
Octavia Butler, Parable of the Talents

“It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”
Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay
