LET'S TALK “ACTION” (PART 1)

“Action” is the device that propels your plot along. In Young Adult fiction, action is also often considered the fun part in many books. Too little action and your story might be perceived as boring; too much action and readers might wish for a richer plot. Most YA fiction has a nice balance of action and plot – think of Rick Riordan's “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series. You had a complex, interesting human-interest story coupled with LOTS of exciting action.

For many folks, action is equated with violence and that's a real concern. There's “chase action,” which is prevalent in many books, but the violence levels continues to rise in YA books, my own included. You have to decide how graphic you want to get, but action often does include either fighting or chasing, and it's up to the author to decide how far to go with that.

What are your thoughts on “action” and violence in Young Adult books? Does it bother you, or do you think it helps the story along?

[In the next segment, I'll show you a sample or two of fighting action from my “Chronicles of Dorro” books.]
