Jónas Hallgrímsson was the leading light of the Romantic movement in Iceland, and was also a key figure in the growing clamour for independence from Denmark. Together with three other Icelanders, all students in Copenhagen, he founded the patriotic journal Fjölnir in 1835. He was also a respected natural scientist, and remains one of Iceland's best loved poets. He died aged only 37 from blood poisoing, after breaking his leg slipping on the stairs in his Copenhagen residence. In 1946 his remains were exhumed, moved from Copenhagen to Iceland, and reburied at Þingvellir. ...more
