Denton Loving lives on a farm near the historic Cumberland Gap, where Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia come together. He is the author of three poetry collections: Feller, Crimes Against Birds, and Tamp which was a finalist for the Weatherford Award and recipient of the inaugural Tennessee Book Award for Poetry. He is also the editor of Seeking Its Own Level: an anthology of writings about water. He has received scholarships and fellowships from organizations such as the Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research, the Eckerd College Writers Conference, and the Key West Literary Seminars. This project was very dear to me not only because I think the novel is superb in every way but also because Lynne Sharon Schwartz has been an incredible mentor and friend to me since I studied with her at the Bennington Writing Seminars. Denton liked an answer from David Joy: Hey David, I went to your reading for a class at WCU last week, and I ended up really enjoying it. I now have a desire to read some literature from Western NC, but after finishing your book, I won't know where to look next. Could you suggest some author with books set in the area that I should read? If you enjoy that type of darker story I'd suggest reading all of Ron Rash's work, particularly the short story collections (Chemistry, Burning Bright, Nothing Gold Can Stay), though I really like his novels as well, my favorite being The World Made See David’s answer.
