Magdalena’s Bones. My Introduction to Self-Publishing

Well, here I am on Goodreads.

I’m still finding my way around all the book promotion sites, all the wild promises of discovering the holy grail of book sales are a steep learning curve for a debut author like myself having decided to self-publish. It has not been easy but then, I have to say, nor has it been a tortuous route of rocket science.

Why did I self publish? Do you know, I tried the traditional publishing route just like every other budding author. Having been stooging around the publishing industry for a few years, I knew the challenges I would face, the relentless pitches to literary agents who never get to answering submissions, the hours of refining pitch after pitch knowing your much anticipated guru expert will not even condescend to reply. You’ve heard it all before, each and every novice author has been there - it’s that first-time break for the new writer that’s so frustratingly hard.

I always did have one eye on self-publishing as an indie author. In my formative pre-kindle years I frequently managed to get published in print and on the web as a freelance writer, I have edited other writer’s work, I spent a good while as a copywriter in the madcap world of advertising - so I know how to write, I know how to hold my reader’s attention.

The attraction of self-publishing to me was my hard-earned experience in advertising, my marketing skills honed to a fine point in the heartless, dubious world of direct marketing. Yes - I’m the one responsible for all those garish mailers you got thru your mailbox, those irritating one-piece offers that made you growl and curse. That was me, I’m sorry, I apologise, but storytelling and the more subliminal forms of advertising are almost one and the same - a well-told story uses the same mind-luring techniques used by cold-hearted advertisers in their boundless quest to entice you.

Direct mail is the bottom end in the glamorous quagmire of advertising - but, except for commercial breaks on the TV, by far the most successful. The reason you received so much junk mail is that just about everyone buys something at some point. You like to think you binned all those teaser mailers but it was that one time you didn’t, that single occasion you answered the call to action, when you purchased the one thing you never imagined you wanted.

Yep - my fault, I wrote the headline copy for the creator who designed the mailer, I wrote the baited hook that for a few seconds held you, I decided that lure based upon your personal profile given to me by the data guys and their client. And yes - the campaigns always worked, we got our pats on the back from our happy clients who invariably came back for more.

When writing a sales pitch I had just six seconds to grab my reader’s attention, no more. After six seconds my selling opportunity was gone, my one chance to tempt the buyer lost, the mailer torn and dumped in the trash. But in those six wonderful seconds I had the reader’s curiosity in my hands, I could pitch my blurb and say almost anything to hold my reader’s attention, to get across why they should buy, why they should relish with envy the all-important offer before their eyes. The pitch. The call to action. The sale. I truly believe that direct selling is a scientific art form, its purgation in its simplest form, it’s a sales technique that’s at least two-thousand years old.

So why am I telling you all this? Firstly, it’s good marketing practice to write a blog, if you have read this far then I at least have your attention - you, my reader, who right now I am working extremely hard to hang on to. Now that I have your interest I can explain to you why Magdalena’s Bones is written in the way it is, why the novel’s synopsis and book blurb is styled differently, why I am endeavouring to use my somewhat underhand technique when compared to all those other book pitches you have read.

Secondly, more importantly, like every author, I’m desperate for you to read my book, to get you to write a review and tell all your friends about me, the new exciting writer on the block D.D. Did.

All wannabe authors are the same, we are all the time on edge, we have nothing, no experience to fall back on except the legions of experts out there who make good money advising novice authors what to do. Three weeks after the launch of Magdalena’s Bones and it’s a nerve-twitching time, am I going to make it. Will my technique work, is my writing style a little too much.

Every breadline author needs to make money to pay the bills and survive - it’s a fine line until the first-time writer becomes established. So I’ve set out to use the skills and experience honed during my rookie years. My book synopsis is written in a hard-hearted way, one that adheres to the same six-second direct sales rule - on the god-given understanding that if my first line or two doesn’t grab you then I’ve lost you.

Magdalena’s Bones is written in time-honoured page-turning style. The book is a fast moving saga because I will have your attention for a pre-stipulated amount of time. I have to dig deep and fast to entertain you, I have to draw you, then lead you down the road I wish to take you, turn your mind in ways you did not think possible.

This is why Magdalena’s Bones is broken into six separate storylines - in my six-second’s way I can hold your attention rather than attempt to keep you mesmerised for the whole five-hundred pages. Each of the storylines are intricately linked, each characteristic confrontation between Gabriel and Eve travels backwards in time. Joined together the storylines create the whole story.

You will see why that, in the beginning, there was no light, why Eve is the beholder of humankind, that Eve was subjugated by Adam, why Gabriel is not the guardian angel he is purported to be - why man and his kind have subdued woman for his own selfish gains. Why Eve’s gender kin has no choice but to fight back…

The reincarnations of Eve have promised their revenge, they have vowed to retake Eve’s world, to make this world a more righteous world. Have you ever considered why all scriptures and commandments are written by men? Why they are etched in stone by men for men to embellish and cherish? If ancient tablets are so stuffed with goodness then why is mankind as a race so wild and violent?

Many of you women out there already know this, you know what it is like to be the subservient race. You know why Eve and her resurrected kind will succeed.

Here is my call to action. Every woman should read Magdalena’s Bones.
