If you want to write a book, find the time and do it. It took me fifteen years to write my first novel. It was me working full time, raising a family, and finding small increments of time to write. I spent lunch breaks at coffeeshops, and sitting on the sidelines of the soccer field bundled in a coat with my laptop, brainstorming during commutes...whatever time I could find to write. I understand, believe me I do when someone says it's hard to find time. Make time. Fifteen years would have come and gone, and if I had never started I would not have finished. I used to look at other writers who whipped out two books a year and I was jealous, but I've learned to love my process and the time it takes for me to write. Granted, I've gone from 15 years to write a book, down to a year and a half, so I've improved, but still my process is slower than many other writers. And that's ok. The fact is to start and find a consistent schedule, and that is the biggest hurdle of all. Action Cures Fear. You can do it!(less)

21 Years Later - Remembering 9/11

It is easy to forget that there is a whole generation now that has no direct connection to the events of 9/11. The more years pass, the more disconnected we become to the events of that day, but we must never forget. With the pandemic at the forefront of our collective focus for the last two years, it's easy to replace one tragedy for another.

This year, I dug through old boxes and found an envelo

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”
Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches

Anne Lamott
“If you are a writer, or want to be a writer, this is how you spend your days--listening, observing, storing things away, making your isolation pay off. You take home all you've taken in, all that you've overheard, and you turn it into gold. (Or at least you try.)”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Anne Lamott
“I don't think you have time to waste not writing because you are afraid you won't be good at it.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Anne Lamott
“Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Anne Lamott
“The society to which we belong seems to be dying or is already dead. I don't mean to sound dramatic, but clearly the dark side is rising. Things could not have been more odd and frightening in the Middle Ages. But the tradition of artists will continue no matter what form the society takes. And this is another reason to write: people need us, to mirror for them and for each other without distortion-not to look around and say, 'Look at yourselves, you idiots!,' but to say, 'This is who we are.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
