Joan Berry was born in Bristol, Virginia, and graduated from Holston Valley High School in Bristol, Tennessee. She owned her own business for almost two decades. Joan married Michael Berry, who is—and has always been—supportive of her work. She is the mother of two sons and one daughter, and grandmother of four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Her only daughter was murdered, sparking her passion for victims' rights. Joan's quest for justice led her to found HOPE for Victims and spearhead legislation that led to the Johnia Berry Act 2007, Truth-In-Sentencing, and the Victim Life Photo Bill.
