Interview with Cheryl Bolen, Author of Christmas Brides: 3 Regency Christmas Novellas

I am delighted to have Cheryl Bolen, with me today to talk about Christmas Brides and Marriage of Inconvenience, both October releases. The acclaimed author of more than a dozen Regency-set historical romance novels, Cheryl Bolen’s books have placed in several writing contests, including the Daphne du Maurier, and have been translated into 11 languages. She was named Notable New Author in 1999, and in 2006 she won the Holt Medallion (Honoring Outstanding Literary Talent) for Best Short Historical Novel. Her books have become Barnes & Noble and Amazon bestsellers. Cheryl holds a dual degree in English and journalism from the University of Texas, and she earned a master’s degree from the University of Houston. She and her professor husband are the parents of two sons, one who is an attorney, and the other a journalist. Her favorite things to do are watching the Longhorns, reading letters and diaries of Georgian Englishmen, and traveling to England.

Barbara Monajem is Stalked by Magic

I can’t get away from magic in one form or another. I thought that when I branched out from paranormal into historical romance, there wouldn’t be any magic in my books. I already knew why I was writing contemporary paranormals – I wanted distance from real life. I thought Regency historicals would work the same way, because 200 years in the past is plenty of distance from today.

Apparently not. Magic is sneaky. In my very first Regency (unpublished and languishing in a virtual drawer hoping to be revised), an Irish tinker walked into the story. He seemed like a regular guy, but it turned out he had some fairy blood. Not that he did anything unusual in that story, but I could just tell, and in the sequel (also languishing in the drawer) his magic crept into the book. That very same story ended with the whisper of a ghost.
