Harvest Your Family Tree for Character Names
Several years ago when I first started working on my short romance, Catastrophe, I knew I wanted the heroine to be a resilient, down-to-earth woman and the hero to be exotic, maybe someone who spoke another language. I struggled with the character names, almost leaving them as HEROINE and HERO, and the story stalled. I turned to my other obsession: spending hours researching my family genealogy.
In the midst of tracking down my grandmother’s side of the family, going back to my great-great-great-grandparents, I found them: my characters. Polly Griggs meet Simon Engleman.
Born in Berlin, Germany in 1765, Simon Engleman immigrated to Kentucky. At the age of twenty-five, Simon married Polly Griggs, age twenty, on March 25, 1790 in Lincoln County Kentucky. When I first “met” Simon and Polly, I envisioned them in frontier country, Simon in an old-fashioned European suit and top hat, Polly in a buckskin dress, bonnet on her head, a baby at her breast and a small child clinging to her skirt: the Daughters of the American Revolution Madonna of the Trail.

What Would You Include in a Reading Group Guide?
I have a rule that when I hear something three times, I pay attention.
Yesterday was the third time someone suggested that I should speak to her book club about my new release, DESIRE AND DECEPTION. This, mind you, in spite of the fact that in the interest of complete and full disclosure, I pointed out to every woman who suggested this that the book was extremely hot. As in steam your computer screens up hot. As in BODY HEAT hot. Undeterred, the women thought it would be a wonderful change of pace. I agreed it would be great fun. What a great opportunity to talk about my work with a group of interested readers. I was so excited.
Then, at three in the morning, I woke up and I realized I didn’t have a discussion guide for DESIRE AND DECEPTION. I am sharing my DRAFT discussion questions for DESIRE AND DECEPTION with you, looking for feedback and input. Here’s what I have in mind so far. Never Grow Up and Other Contrarian Advice
As a recent arrival to the realm of “Published Author,” I am here to provide the contrarian’s guide to achieving this status. There truly is no one route to publication. You really don’t need an MFA. You don’t even have to have majored in English, although being able to use the language correctly is a plus. You don’t have to starve in an attic writing timeless prose or poetry. You don’t have to have lived in the belly of the underworld and struggled with alcoholism and addiction, although that has worked for others. You don’t even have to have designated office space. What do you need? Here are my top ten tips for becoming a published author.

BLOG: Jannine Gallant on Starting with a Bang
First things first – Sharon thank you so much for having me on your blog today. This is my first stop in my promotional tour for Nothing But Trouble, part of the Honky Tonk Hearts series releasing tomorrow from The Wild Rose Press, so I’m thrilled to be here. And since it’s my first stop, I thought I’d talk about beginnings.
How many of you agonize over the opening scene in your book and rewrite it countless times? It’s the hook that catches the reader’s attention, so it has to be perfect. At least that’s the way I look at it as I revise the first page of my WIP for the 120th time, changing one word here and one word there… You get the picture, and those of you who write can probably relate. The opening scene does more than you think. It doesn’t just introduce your characters and setting. It sets the tone for the book. It shows off your style.
