Kathleen Kaufman is an author of magical realism and feminist gothic horror, exploring “the other” from ”the other’s” point of view. Her fiction explores how the horror of the past manifests in the present, and the inescapable intertwining of generational history. Her prose has been praised by Kirkus Reviews as “crisp, elegant” and “genuinely chilling” by Booklist. She is the author of the Diabhal trilogy, The Lairdbalor, soon to be a feature film directed by Nicholas Verso, Hag, and The Tree Museum. Kathleen is a professor at Santa Monica College and lives in Los Angeles with her husband, son, kitten, and hound.

I had a chance to read this as an ARC and it opened up a world of Mormon life, and women’s roles in plural families that was fascinating. Hamilton creates a world that pulls you in and gets under your skin

As a Sci Fi/Speculative/Afrofuturism fan- this was fabulous. The Rider by Tananarive Due is my favorite- and Nalo Hopkinson’s The Strongest Obeah Woman of the World will live rent free in head forever

Finished this over two days- absolutely compulsively absorbing. Rawles creates some truly disturbing moments and really taps into the dark voyeurism that is ‘reality’ entertainment.

This was recommended to me after devouring Aisling Rawle’s The Compound. And like The Compound, I read it in a single day. Darkly fun, fast paced, and extremely compelling. Were there a couple of plot holes? Yes. Did I care? No.
