Why It’s Okay To Say “No”

(and why procrastination sometimes is my middle name…)

Meant to have this up two weeks ago but, ah, life happens.

Congratulations! Your novel is a relative success! People know your name, your work, and it seems that everyone is a fan and you’ve received that random 1-star review from somewhere. You’ve officially made it. This is the best of times!

There comes a moment as a professional writer where it seems that everyone and anyone wants you for their short stories (or to write books i...

Release Week x2

I’ve been so busy at work that I completely forgot to mention that I had stories in two different anthologies come out this week, as well as had two more accepted into upcoming anthologies.

The first, of course, is the Monster Hunter Files Vol. 2 anthology, edited by myself and Larry Correia. This one has been in the works since 2023 and we finally got to see it published at Baen. With 13 monster hunting stories inside, this one is a worthy successor to the first Monster Hunter Files, and a f...

Why Word of Mouth Is So Important

I just celebrated 15 years of writing back in December 2025 (my first novel, Corruptor, was released in 2010), and I’ve worked in publishing now for almost 23 years. I’ve learned quite a bit about this industry, and things pertaining to it that I wish I hadn’t. I’ve learned how every step of the process leads o the book coming into being, how the rejection process works, a hard vs. soft rejection, etc. But one thing that always seems to vex new authors is how to market. But… let you in on a litt...

New Cover(s) Revealed!

I love showing off cover art for upcoming books!

Book 3 of the Quintus Fox series, Stars Over El Dorado, will be out later this year (shooting for July/August 2026). Since I had a delay on the last QF book, Amazon doesn’t let me do preorders anymore. That’s all good, though. I can work around it.

It’s going to be slightly longer than the first book (Bounty Hunter) and significantly longer than Moons Run Red.

And then book 4, Renegades at Tycho Station, will be out either in December...

Icepocalypse 2026

Here in North Carolina, we don’t get snow like I used to back in Colorado. No, they get this stuff they claim is snow but anybody who has seen real snow before knows that it’s really ice.

The ice storm that hit us here didn’t knock out the power (thankfully), but it has made leaving home a bit impossible. Not only are the roads utter crap, there’s more on the way.

But… cold weather makes for a productive Jason, and the past two days have seen an insane amount of writing on new material.

New Book Out!

My coauthor Nick Steverson just had a new book drop on Friday. Set in the Four Horsemen Universe (I have six books set in this universe), Nick is taking the Bounty Hunter Guild to new levels as the need for some violence on a level normal Peacemakers can’t deliver. Heads Will Roll is the latest addition to the bestseller universe.

The Peacemaker Guild is stretched beyond its limits. Limits that seem to grow tighter with each passing day. As the reach of the law shortens, that of murderers, tr...

To Tread Obsidian Shores — Week 1 Release and Other Updates

So how has the book been doing? Not too shabby, actually. It just missed the new release national bestseller list (print format, because they don’t count ebooks) and has gotten nothing but stellar reviews so far. Jonathan Koan reviewed it this morning over on his Youtube channel, Publisher’s Weekly did a nice review of it… so far, so good.

Melissa and I are hard at work on Book 2, Vessels Grim and Daring. That is currently scheduled for the end of this year for publication, and our turn in da...

TO TREAD OBSIDIAN SHORES — Snippet 29 (FINAL SNIPPET)

Available Tuesday, Jan 6 everywhere Baen Books are sold!

It’s the final snippet for the book! Let’s get ready for liberty call!

It wasn’t much of one, a simple tripwire with a mine resting at the base of a tree and a smoke grenade beneath it, but it would have been enough to completely wipe out the small fire team had they come this way. While the mine was a dummy and was set to simply pop red smoke had they tripped it, it would have been enough to cause their team to fail the exercis...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone out there!

This year, the official final word count tally was 1,403,259 words written. That is, by a large margin, the most words I’ve ever written in a calendar year. So what made this year so different, especially with all the health challenges I’d faced?

Part of it was changing my sleep cycle. I used to stay up until midnight or later and get up at seven to get ready for work. Instead, I focused on having two primary writing sessions per weekday–7:00AM-10:00AM...
