Building Arcadia takes place over a span of three years. During that time, the characters are separated and brought together in various combinations, due both to circumstance and their own decisions regarding "what is best".

This is Kelly's song. It represents her determination, despair, and strength.

"I'll Find a Way" by Rachel Yamagata

Excerpt:

[Connor's] poker face had improved, and now when Kelly asked how he was and he said “no complaints”, it took her an extra few seconds to interpret his expression. She wanted to ask him about other things, about rumors one heard about prison, but she wasn’t going to ask in a crowded room next to other inmates and their wives and mothers.

When the guard looked away, she risked brushing the back of Connor’s hand with her fingers. He sucked in a sharp breath.

“Maybe you should find out about conjugal visits,” she said. He nodded with his mouth hanging open. It took all her restraint not to fling herself across the table. In the end, the guard broke them up with a sharp “Touching!” barked from his position near the door. Connor dropped his hand to his side, as if he had been the one breaking the rules.

“Did I get you in trouble?” Kelly asked.

He shook his head, wry smile in place, and said, “It’ll be worth it.”

“Is that prison humor or are you really... Connor, is it something?”

“I’m kidding, babe. Don’t worry.”

And there it was, his new poker face, and this one she could not interpret, not even after she rolled it over in her mind for hours.

BA Soundtrack Day 3: Oh, boys.

It's day 3 of the 5 day, 5 song soundtrack for Building Arcadia.

We enter into spoilery territory with this selection, so I'll just say this: boys are stupid.

"Free of Me" by Joshua Radin
Listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dKRe5...

Excerpt:

Whenever they called he would answer, and that was maybe a bad thing. He couldn’t get back to his life as long as that was true. Maybe it would be better if he changed his number and forgot theirs.

His thumb traced over the icon for his phone’s contacts list. It would be easy, so easy to call his service and get a new number.

He shoved the phone back into his pocket.

He would never do it. There was no sense in pretending. Connor and Kelly had him, whether they wanted him or not, whether they knew it or not.

Sam shut himself into his in-house studio for the rest of the day. It wasn’t as high tech as some people had, but the walls were soundproof and he could wail all he wanted without worrying about disturbing anyone who might be in the house, and, more importantly, the red light outside the door stopped anyone from disturbing him. The song came quickly. He didn’t try to disguise what it was about. That could come later. He’d whitewash himself and Connor and Kelly out of it.

If he’d told them that he wasn’t leaving, what would they have done? Too late now to find out. Too late now for anything. He wasn’t going to tell them he missed them, loved them, needed them to need him. There wasn’t a point to it anymore.

When he emerged from the studio, Tarran was in the living room pulling Chinese food cartons out of a plastic bag and setting them on the coffee table.

Are you guys enjoying this, let me know!

BA Soundtrack Day 4: She Cries Your Name

*waves to the one person who is reading this* Hi!!

It's day 4, can you believe it? Today's song is "She Cries Your Name" by Beth Orton. (Note: video has nothing to do with the song. I couldn't find a static pic for this one, so instead I'm using one w/ pics of Russell Crowe from Gladiator.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deDuVP...

Excerpt:

She found her father in the living room with a handful of RCA cables and an instruction manual. He looked like he was about to wire up a bomb, not an entertainment system. “Daddy.…” He looked at her with the expression of a man undeterred from his mission, so she left him alone.

“Momma?” Kelly’s mother was in the laundry room, having somehow found something to wash.

“Just doing your sheets, dear.”

“I was thinking, you know, you and Daddy have done so much these past months. I think you should have a date night.”

“Oh, we couldn’t leave you.”

“Daddy will have the television hooked up before long. I’ll watch DVDs.... and I could use some me time.”

Her mother squeezed Kelly's shoulders in the new familiar-unfamiliar way. “I bet you could. All right, Daddy and I will get out of your hair this evening.” She pulled Kelly forward and kissed the top of her head. “Don’t do anything crazy, you hear me?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

The apartment had two bedrooms, both huge. Kelly hadn’t been sure why she needed two bedrooms until it became clear her parents would be staying for a time. Calls arrived from various other family members claiming a stake in the room once they left. “We don’t want you staying that big city alone, sweetie,” Aunt Rosie had said, echoing the sentiment of every other relative. Each bedroom had a private bath, plus there was an unattached half bath off the hallway between the living room and an as-yet-undesignated room, which her mother said could be a nursery until she caught the look off Kelly’s father and amended it to ‘office’. Kelly planned to turn it into a yoga and meditation space.

The apartment was a ten-minute drive from the prison, though in D.C. traffic it was more like an hour. They hadn’t figured in traffic time when they bought it. It was more about the location. Kelly's safety was paramount, her parents had decided.

If living arrangements were up to Kelly, she’d pitch a tent on CTF’s front lot.

She needed to rethink that ‘not sentimental’ thing.

Alone in the apartment, she didn’t cry. She didn’t do anything. She sat on the couch. Didn’t turn on the television. The apartment had sounds she had never noticed: humming and clicking and distant whirring. She listened to them. They sounded far away and made the place seem larger. The furniture had come with the apartment. There were no marks of use on it, but it had a history. Probably nothing special: chatting with guests on the couch, or a dog vomiting on the rug, or a cat sleeping in the rocking chair.

Maybe she should get a cat. That might be nice. Someone small and warm. Something, she corrected herself.

Blurb:

A dark alley, an unprovoked attack.

A lethal shooting. An accused man who can't remember holding the gun.

For two best friends, an evening out gone horribly wrong.

Connor Adams can't remember killing one of the men who attacked him and his best friend Sam.

What he does remember is this: three man-shaped shadows coming towards them, a struggle, and Sam falling to the ground. But the attacker is dead, Sam lies in a coma, and evidence points squarely at Connor. Facing twenty-five years in prison and dealing with the grief of Sam's condition, Connor doesn't know if he should lean on his wife Kelly for support or divorce her and let her move on.

As they struggle to find the truth of that fateful night, Connor, Kelly, and Sam realize that they need each other like never before and that their long friendship is growing into love. But how can they get around the circumstances of forced separation as well as their reluctance to show their true feelings to find a way back to each other?

**Contains adult scenes of homosexual and heterosexual content, as well as polyamory, but this is not an erotica.**
