Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Grace Richard and I am a science fiction and fantasy romance author. I was born in New York, The Bronx in 1982 and it was a great time to be a kid. My imagination was sparked by the cartoons and movies of the 1980's and the 1970's. I was the youngest of two and my older brother and I would play make-believe in the back yard.

I was brought up in an Italian household and my parents were overprotective. We were brought up very sheltered so in order to experience things I had to make up my own world. I would talk and sing to myself constantly but never in public. I didn't have a lot of friends so I would make up people to talk to.

I didn't know it at the time but I was doing early character creation. They Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Grace Richard and I am a science fiction and fantasy romance author. I would talk and sing to myself constantly but never in public. I didn't have a lot of friends so I would make up people to talk to.

I didn't know it at the time but I was doing early character creation. They were mostly based on the personalities of the cartoons I would watch and the classic fairytales I read. Because of this I didn't learn how to interact with real people. That gap in my development made it very hard to make friends. I became withdrawn and angry.

Because of that the people around me thought their was something wrong with my intelligence. It's hard to have a good work ethic when everyone thinks you are dumb. I struggled with this most of my childhood and became a target for bullies. When I got to Junior High, I was surrounded by kids who had that predictor mentality.

Because I grew up sheltered I had the emotional mentality of a 4 year old. Junior High in the Bronx is very much like prison and if you don't fit in with any group you are lunchmeat. I was never assaulted, I was extorted for money and homework. I eventually got the courage to tell my parents and no one told me that snitches get stiches. The bullying got worse.

I was going to give up and except my fate when my parents told me that they were moving me and my brother to my grandparents in Upstate New York. Away from the danger and my over-protective parents I was able to breathe. After a few months one of my brothers friends introduced me to a game that changed my life, Dungeons and Dragons.

Playing that game opened up a whole new world to me. I made friends and felt like I finally found people who understand me. My High School years were still ruff because I was an outcast but at least I was not alone. I took up fencing as a hobby and started going to Renaissance fairs. My favorite show at the time was Xena warrior princess and I wanted to be just like her.

I also developed a love of Anime. I loved Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Slayers, Pokemon, YuGiYo, and other anime's that were popular in 1990's. Any time I would think of my imaginary world I would picture it as an anime. My family thought it was weird but as long as I was not drinking, smoking, doing drugs and having sex, they left me alone.

When I got to college I went to my first gaming convention and it really sparked my imagination. I started writing short stories and plays but felt like they were never good enough. Every time I tried to write I would get writers block or the struggles of real life would get in my way. Even though I was an adult my family still kept me in a bubble, trying to control every aspect of my life.

I wasn't able to break free until I got together with my husband. He taught me to think and act like an adult and I was finally becoming who I was meant to be. I learned how to take care of myself as well as him. I got a job and started taking Karate. I still had trouble finding my motivation to write until the 2020 pandemic.

When the pandemic started I was working as a New York State Corrections Officer. (Yes, the kid who got picked on in the school yard became a prison guard.) During the pandemic I truly felt alone with working all the overtime shifts and seeing all the hate on social media towards law enforcement. I became angry and withdrawn again.

Progress on my new book

For the past six years I have been writing a dark fairytale. I plan to break it up into several books and the first is going to be called The Emerald Woods. I'm taking classic fairytale characters and putting my own spin on them. I'll let you know when the book is finished.

Reading this has been a real treat. Tolkien created a world that makes you turn the page in anticipation. I'm not going into detail because I don't like spoiling an amazing story for anyone who has not read it. I will say following the characters as ...more
