3-Thread Coverstitch Wide

Set machine for a Wide Coverstitch, using two needles threaded with standard serger cone thread.Thread Chain Looper with blended 12 wt. decorative embellishment thread.

3-Thread Coverstitch Narrow

Add parallel rows of Narrow Coverstitching in a different thread color selection, for added interest.Move left needle to center position, and thread chain looper with a second color option of 12 wt. decorative embellishment thread.

2-Thread Chain Stitching

Remove right needle, and change chain looper thread to a third color option of 12 wt. decorative embellishment thread.Place left edge of presser foot along opposite edge of Wide Coverstitching.Note: Chain Stitching uses only one needle and creates a straight line of stitching.

3-Thread Flatlock Wide Stitch

Set machine for a wide flatlock stitch, and thread Chain Looper with Sulky Blendable 12 wt. decorative embellishment thread.

Serger Pintucks – 3-Thread Narrow Stitch

Set machine for a 3-thread narrow standard overlock stitch, and thread upper looper with Sulky Blendable 12 wt. decorative embellishment thread.

Serger Piping – 4-Thread Overlock Stitch.

Attach a Serger Piping Pressser Foot, set machine for a 4-thread standard overlock stitch, and thread both needles upper looper, and lower looper with coordinating Serger Cone Thread.

Schmetz ELx705 Serger Overlock Needles have for less thread breakage and straighter stitches.

Machine Needle Threader threads serger needles with ease! Simply position a length of thread within the guide at the front of the threader. Then, push and slide the threader down the shaft of the needle. When the threader meets the eye of the needle, the needle threader will insert thread into the eye of the needle.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

 

Approx. Finished Size: 8″ W x 29″ L

Cut Fabrics and Supplies

Using Rotary Cutter, Rotary Cutting Ruler and Mat, cut one rectangle approx. 58″/60″ W x 18″ L from Jersey Knit Fabric and trim away selvedges.

 

 

A 58″/60″ W x 18″ L rectangle is a half-yard of Jersey Knit fabric!

 

Cut one 3″- 4″ length Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape .

Create the Twist it! Loop Scarf

 

 

Now’s the perfect time to use a serger!

 

 

Set serger overlocker machine for a 4-thread serger overlock stitch. Insert new  Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12 and thread machine with Four Cones Coordinating Serger Cone Threads

 

Fold fabric rectangle, right sides together, meeting long edges. Pin.

 

 

When placing pins for a serging project, insert pins parallel to fabric cut edge – this way you don’t risk cutting into pins with your serger blade!

 

Serge long edge seam with 1/4″ seam allowance.Trim fabric cut edges, while stitching.Remove pins, while stitching.

 

 

If stitching scarf with a sewing machine, set sewing machine for a “wobble-stitch”: Choose a slight zigzag (2.0-2.5 length and .5 width). On the outside, this stitch will give the appearance of a straight stitch, while providing a slight amount of stretch to the seam!  If stitching with a sewing machine, be sure to backstitch at seam beginning and ending. For extra durability during wear – stitch this seam again, stitching over original stitching line. No need to double stitch when using a serger!

 

Fold fabric tube, right sides together, stacking and aligning stitched seam: Reach into the fabric tube and turn tube onto itself keeping right sides together, stitched side seam aligned, and align cut edges.

Place pins through single fabric layers, opposite from stitched seam, along folds of short ends. “Twist” fabric tube and align pins with stitched seams. Pin.

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge , measure and mark a 3″- 4″ opening (for turning) along one cut edge, approximately 3″- 4″ from seam.Mark opening with Clover’s Chaco Liner or I Sew For Fun Marking Pen .

Stitch seam, leaving seam open between markings.

Finish Twist it! Loop Scarf

Turn scarf right side out through seam opening.Fuse Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape strip to one inner seam allowance, at seam opening.

Remove paper backing from Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape .Press seam closed.

 

 

Optional: Using a hand sewing needle and thread, hand stitch seam opening closed!

Stitch it! Sisters Absolute Easiest Way to Sew Quilt Binding Sewing Tutorial

Create Binding

Using a Rotary Cutter, Ruler and, mat, cut four 2-1/4″ x 22″ Burgundy Cotton Shades fabric strips and three 2-1/4″ x 22″ Grape Cotton Shades. With right sides together, place one Burgundy fabric strip to one Grape fabric strip, offsetting strips 1/2″.Stitch short ends of strips, using a diagonal seam, connecting angle intersections.Trim seam allowances to 1/4′. Stitch remaining fabric strips together, alternating Burgundy and Grape Cotton Shades – as shown – to create binding. Using a Rotary Cutter, Ruler and mat, cut strip in half at a 45-degree angle.

Using  Clover’s Hot Ruler , press under 1/4″ along 45-degree short end.

Cut a length of  Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape .Following manufactures instructions fuse web tape to right side of pressed binding edge.

Place fabric strip wrong sides together, meeting long edges. Press.

Attach Binding

Meet binding cut edge to quilt edge, right sides together, near center of one edge. Pin.

Stitch binding to quilt, beginning stitching at about 4″ from binding end. Backstitch.Stitch using scant 1/4″ seam.

Prior to reaching the first corner, using  Clover’s Seams Right  and  Fine White Marking Pen,  mark a dot at 1/4″ from corner.

Continue to stitching to marked dot. Backstitch. Cut threads. Rotate quilt.

Fold binding up at angle–along same plane as quilt edge. Finger press to mark crease.

Using  Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl Stiletto , fold binding forward over awl, meeting binding cut edge to quilt cut edge.Stitch seam and backstitch at corner.

Continue stitching, removing pins as you sew.

Repeat steps above on all four corners.After stitching the final corner, stop stitching about 4″ away from angle-folded end of beginning binding. Backstitch.

Remove paper backing from  Clover’s 1/4″ Fusible Web Tape , insert ending binding into beginning of binding. Fold under end of binding, press.

Using  scissors  cut away excess binding end.Re-fold binding right sides together. Press.

Stitch binding to quilt edge. Backstitch. Press binding away from quilt center.

Fold or “wrap” binding to wrong side, fussy folding corner folds to desired angles. Wonder Clip  binding to quilt back.

Attached  Edge Joining Presser Foot  to sewing machine.Stitch binding to quilt, stitching in the “ditch” or the “well” of the seam – where the binding meets the quilt.

 

For a nearly “invisible” seam, stitch binding to quilt, stitching in the “ditch” with Monofilament Thread.

Before straight line machine quilting with  The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot , first prepare quilt layers – for the quilting process.

Cut quilt backing and Pellon Fleece/quilt batting 4″-8″ larger than quit top.Tape quilt backing to cutting table, to prevent wrinkles during the quilt basting steps.

Secure, or “baste”,  quilt laters together with safety pins, or spray June Tailor’s Quilt Basting Spray to back side of Pellon Fleece, then turn fleece over and hand-press to wrong side of quilt backing.  Spray  June Tailor’s Quilt Basting Spray  to top side of Pellon Fleece and hand-press wrong side of quilt top to fleece.

Quilt is now ready for straight line machine quilting, with  The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot! Attach The Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot to your sewing machine. NOTE: Some machines, including our Baby Lock, require a shank adapter – available from your local dealer.

Set machine for a straight stitch (2.5-3.0 mm stitch length), and insert a new Schmetz Size 75-90 Quilting Needle. 

 If you’ve opted to “spray-baste” quilt layers together using June Tailor’s Quilt Basting Spray, choose a new Schmetz Size 75-90 Super Nonstick Needle!

The sewing is fun and the finished fabric bowl provides a festive table centerpiece.

St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Gnomes Fabric Bowl Sewing Tutorial

Approximate finished size: 8″ Diameter

Cut two 6-1/2″ squares for “inner circle”.Cut two 6-1/2″ squares from Pellon Fusible Fleece.

 

Create the Inner Circle

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, or a salad bowl, trace a 6″ circle on “inner circle” fabric.

 Using Bordeaux Scissors ,  or Rotary Cutter, cut a 2-1/2″ slit opening near center circle.

Place fabric squares right sides together. Stack and place both fusible fleece squares to wrong side of outer fabric circle. Wonder Clip layers together.

Stitch around entire outer circle. Backstitch at beginning and ending of seam.

 

Using pinking shears, or 45mm rotary cutter with pinking blade trim away excess fabric.

Turn circle right side out through opening, and use  Point 2 Point Turner  to smooth edges while turning.

 

Press. Set aside.

 

Create Outer Strips

Cut Two 2-1/2″ crosswise fabric strips each from four fat quarters – each measuring approximately 2-1/2″ x 21″.

 

If using 2-1/2″ Precut Fabric Strips, select Four Coordinating fabric strips each assorted darks, mediums, and lights!

Place crosswise fabric strips right sides together, offsetting short ends, and stitch diagonally between right angles.

Seam fabric strips together with diagonal seams, stitching all strips in to one continuous strip. Clip threads.

Press seams flat, then press seams open.Trim away excess seam allowance.

 

Cut batting strip narrow end at a 45° angle. Fold narrow fabric strip end, wrong sides together, at a 45° angle. Press.Place 2-1/2″ batting strip to wrong side of fabric strip. Place batting strip about 3″ in from fabric fold.

Following manufactures instructions, insert fabric and fleece into Clover’s Fabric Tube maker.

 

Set Sewing machine for a 3.0 straight stitch, attach an Open Toe Presser Foot , insert a new Schmetz Size 90 Jeans/Denim Needle, and edgestitch along long edge.Advancing Fabric Tube Maker as you stitch.

 

Complete sewing continuous fabric strip by cutting narrow end at a 45° angle. Cut batting strip end at  45° angle, and 1″ shorter than fabric. Fold fabric strip end up, wrong sides together.

Continue stitching to end of strip and backstitch.

Tuck folded end of fabric strip under center circle.

Set sewing machine for a wide zigzag stitch, and stitch fabric strip to inner circle. After stitching about an inch, gradually reveal entire width of strip and continue stitching – meeting circle edge to edge of fabric strip. Zig in one fabric and zag in the other, while “kissing” fabric edges together.

Continue stitching, lifting bowl as you stitch.

At about 4″ from the end, tuck folded end of fabric strip under fabric bowl rim, and continue stitching to end of strip. Backstitch.
