Victoria Reiby is an Australian author who writes thrillers and mysteries shaped by the harsh grit of the Queensland outback.

Her stories are set in remote towns, isolated hospitals, cattle country and unforgiving landscapes where distance breeds secrecy, and help is never close. Drawing on years of experience as a doctor working in emergency medicine, she brings realism, tension, and a keen understanding of human behaviour to stories about danger, betrayal, survival, and the lies people tell when they believe no one is watching.

Victoria’s fiction explores ordinary people caught in extraordinary situations, where trust can be fatal, the landscape is as threatening as the people in it, and buried secrets rarely stay buried.

Historical charm in spades!
I particularly loved the thoughtful themes around universal suffrage and the appreciation for women enjoying reading. A solid four stars for a captivating and well-crafted story.

An excellent book. Warm, funny, at times anecdotal from the author.

“Then Jordan asked, very softly, “Do you love me?”
Tommy blinked.
The mother didn’t answer him.
Jordan waited inside it.
Ava could hear him waiting.
Then came another sound. Metal dragged over concrete. A container lifted. Liquid shifted inside.
Everyone in the pump house went still.
Simon whispered, “No.”
Ava kept staring at the recorder.
Her mother’s voice came back, lower now, more intent. “Listen carefully, both of you. This is what happens when children open their mouths at the wrong time.”
