My parents lived in Denver in 1956 and often went home for the holidays. My uncle Jim was totally freaked out driving 800 miles, in the dead of winter, through Nebraska farm land, with a woman who could go into labor at any minute, so I was born Michele Rae Jeffryes in Newman Grove, Nebraska.

I grew up in southwest Denver with 5 sisters and a brother. Of course in the 1960's, that meant somewhere near 1st and Federal. Now southwest Denver is closer to Chatfield Reservoir. I was fifteen when I was spirited away by my mother and stepfather to the strange land of Sioux Falls, SD, where I wrote my first short story. It was a paranormal romance about the ghost of a man's first wife trying to kill his second wife. Like so many things teenagers wr

I often go so far as to find pictures on the Internet that resemble my characters. They come to life in my mind and each one has a story. While writing Ransom, book three of The Healing Crystal trilogy, I needed an ambitious female character to make a play for power. I wrote the background outline for Ensaris and set her in play. By the fifth or sixth chapter, she totally wimped out on me. She kept telling me a Family Mediator wouldn’t think that way or do those things. Try as I might, she refused to be power hungry. I had to replace her with a security guard who, to that point, had been very inactive.(less)

Heir to Power – Chapter 11

Trep scarcely had time to slip into the house before he heard the light rap of Isontra’s walking stick at the door. He quickly tossed some of Naturi’s drawings on the table, composed himself, and went to let her in. With her silver head held high, Isontra walked purposefully to the center of the room,... Michele Poague BIG THANKS TO JUDGE 16 WHO READ AND EVALUATED HEIR TO POWER FOR THE 19TH ANNUAL WRITER'S DIGEST SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK AWARDS
On a scale of 1 to 5, with one meaning 'Poor' and 5 meaning 'Excellent', Judge 16 gave Heir to Power a "5" across the board for Plot, Grammar, Character Development and Production Quality/Cover Design. Judge 16 also offered these comments: "First in a series, this science fiction novel conjures up a fascinating world replete with an isolated community set in its way which has come to terms with a mysterious outsider. The community, populated by extra large people, possesses an extremely valuable healing crystal that it desperately protects. A vault with remnants of our current era is discovered, leading to odd events. Healers as wall as strange customs are shown in vivid scenes. The characters come alive with recognizable emotions as they struggle to preserve their way of life. A map of the region and a rundown of the key characters are both useful appendages"...
