My goodness, I can't believe a whole month went by without me being able to update the site. Suffice to say that June was one hell of a ride.
Submissions for The Ghost Is the Machine, the anthology of fiction that I'm guest editing for Post Mortem Press, became a flood in the last 48 hours of the submission window back in May -- several dozen stories arrived in two days. After a month of reading, editing and fielding rewrites, I am pleased to announce that the anthology has been sent to the publisher for final review! Sixteen great stories were selected for the final book. Congratulations to all the writers involved. I'll be posting updates here and on my Facebook fan page about the book's publication as the details become available!
Toward the end of May, I also received some welcome news regarding one of my short stories, a sci-fi tale called "Salvage." Open Heart Publishing has selected "Salvage" to appear in An Honest Lie Vol. 4: Petulant Parables. I previously worked with the folks at Open Heart in 2010, when they published my short story "The Registry of Lost Socks" in the second volume of their annual anthology. Suffice to say that I am exuberant to be working with them again.
Last month, I also attended a media convention for work in Indianapolis. At the convention's annual awards banquet, I received an honorable mention for a photo essay titled "Charity in Motion" that I did with Randy Hale about a wheelchair distribution for the needy in Vietnam, Cuba and the Philippines (Randy took the photos; I wrote the words). I also received a second place award from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists for my Naugatuck Patch article about the borough's cultural heritage night.
Finally, my short story "Infected" is currently running in the debut issue of Nine: A Journal of Speculative Fiction. You can buy a digital copy of the magazine's first issue HERE.

News: July 2013
As expected, June was a slow writing month because of all the travel I had to do for both personal reasons and work (stupid life interrupting my well-orchestrated schedule!). However, I nonetheless have a few bits of news to report.
At the start of June, I was selected to receive an advance copy of the July/August 2013 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction with the understanding that I would blog, post or write about the issue in some way. I chose to review the issue -- which features work by K.J. Kabza, Paul Di Filippo, Eleanor Arnason and Chen Qiufan -- in its entirety. You can find the entire review on this blog or by clicking HERE.
As part of my travels last month, I also attended a media convention for work. At the annual awards ceremony, the magazine that I work for by day received second place in the general excellence category, the highest award given by this particular organization. This was a real coup for us considering that we haven't placed in at least seven years!
Well, that's all for this month. Until next time, thanks for reading!

News: February 2014
As usual, January has flown by and we're already into the second month of 2014. But the start of the new year has already brought with it a bounty of good news.
First, I'm proud to announce that after more than 20 rejections, my short story "Hex McGowan and the Cat's Meow" has finally found a home at Solarwyrm Press. The story will be released in an upcoming anthology that will be partially funded through Kickstarter. I'll post more information about the crowdfunding campaign when the initiative has launched.
Second, the magazine that I work for by day is up for a whopping 45 awards at this year's industry press conference. (I know, because I made PDFs for all of them!) Of those entries, three are stories that I wrote in 2013. Here's keeping our fingers crossed for the awards banquet in June.
Finally this month, I've seen some of the preliminary cover art for The Horse Thieves and Other Tales of the New West. I'm pleased to let you all know that the eminently talented Dwayne Vance will be providing the cover art, and it's a doozy. I simply can't wait to share it with the world.
Once the final cover art is in, the publisher should announce a release date for the book, at which time I will shout it from the rooftops.
Thanks for making the start of 2014 great! Until next month, happy reading!

Hear that? It's just the crickets in the background as I write this month's update. June was quiet, but for good reasons. I've been writing steadily again and am nearly done with the first draft of my new book. I also had the pleasure of traveling to Charlotte for a media convention at which my day-job magazine won several awards. I received two third-place honors for my work writing copy for two photo-heavy stories. Plus I got to visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
I also received word that my debut book, The Horse Thieves and Other Tales of the New West, is now being formatted. A release date and cover reveal, with art by Dwayne Vance, should be immanent. Watch this space and my various social media pages for more updates.
Until next month, happy reading!
