Hi Matthew! Great question.

Regardless of whether the review is positive or negative, I thank the person for taking the time to read and review my work.

Writing is art. Art is subjective. Not everyone will love my work, particularly poetry. I get that. I don't love everything I read! So I decided long ago to be thankful, grateful that people are reading me, even if they are mean or rude in their review of it.

Sure, it can sting. I'm human. But I hope I can learn something for future books or at least as a person.

Thank you for asking!

Best,
Rachel (less)

So far, I haven't experienced it. Sure, some days go better than others, but that's the case in any field or heck, life.

If I feel stuck, I go for a walk, listen to music, read, play with my kids. I view writing as a wonderful, amazing, creative job. But it's still a job. Butt in the seat, every day. Write. Even if it's a tweet, or a blog post, or three lines of a poem. Write something. Every single day. (less)

“She wondered If I had woken up, would I have smelled his sadness, his desperation, and his detachment?

His death, her breath.

He told her once, she remembers, these two words have no other rhyme but each other.

If she could go back, she thinks --

She would open her eyes, instead of her heart.”
Rachel Thompson, Broken Pieces

“Women have rooms inside of us men cannot fathom.

It’s where we store the depths of the hurt we’ve been dealt.

Where we store the deep love we never want to lose.”
Rachel Thompson, Broken Pieces

“I gave my heart to a man who loved me, who wanted to be with me. Who ultimately was afraid of all I offered.
I didn’t understand why he sabotaged our future at the time – cheating on me, again, as we were making final plans to move in together. By the time he came over to smooth talk his way out of it, I was done. No more crying. Even my tears had given up on him. I’d already moved on, his cheating was simply the key left in the mailbox.”

“When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.”
Maya Angelou

“A man once asked me ... how I managed in my books to write such natural conversation between men when they were by themselves. Was I, by any chance, a member of a large, mixed family with a lot of male friends? I replied that, on the contrary, I was an only child and had practically never seen or spoken to any men of my own age till I was about twenty-five. "Well," said the man, "I shouldn't have expected a woman (meaning me) to have been able to make it so convincing." I replied that I had coped with this difficult problem by making my men talk, as far as possible, like ordinary human beings. This aspect of the matter seemed to surprise the other speaker; he said no more, but took it away to chew it over. One of these days it may quite likely occur to him that women, as well as men, when left to themselves, talk very much like human beings also.”
Dorothy L. Sayers, Are Women Human? Penetrating, Sensible and Witty Essays on the Role of Women in Society

“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore.”
Lady Gaga

“There are two types of visions. Those that will happen no matter what, and those that can be stopped. Now more than ever, I wish I could tell them apart.”
Emlyn Chand, Farsighted

“I have slept with you all night long while the dark earth spins with the living and the dead, and on waking suddenly in the midst of the shadow my arm encircled your waist. Neither night nor sleep could separate us.”
