Why?…moreI'm finding these days--with some exceptions, of course--that I'm having the most rewarding fun going back to fiction of all kinds from my youth. Why? Because sometimes they end up better than I remember them (even when loved them); sometimes they don't hold up at all; and sometimes they're so different from what I remember that they might s well be totally different stories and I a visitor from a parallel universe. But I always come to realizations, valued ones, about myself, those novels and short stories, and the eras that gave birth to them. So...this summer I'll probably be going back to Cordwainer Smith, Pohl, Kornbluth, Knight, Mervyn Peake and others in science fiction and fantasy; and in "literary" fiction Par Lagerkvist, William Styron, Robert Stone, Flannery O'Connor and others, with a focus on short stories, since that's a form I've always loved and always will. Of course, the dividing line between "genre" fiction and "literary" makes no sense; both are a part of me and the writing I do and have done for decades (I learned my craft from both and apply that craft to both), and today the dividing line societally and even canonically makes even less sense given the cross-pollination everywhere. “Words have no power... which you do not give them.”
Bruce McAllister, The Village Sang to the Sea: A Memoir of Magic

“What are these two lies - these Illusions - that for too long have done their best to keep us from a real peace where we can still remain human? One is certainly the glory of war. It offers us cheaply, but with tragic results, a sense of power in the face of that 20th Century helplessness and powerlessness we hear so much about. War is about the power that fear demands of us, isn't it? Power, after all (the lie assures us), is what the world is really about, isn't it? The meek are fools. The reasonable are suckers. If you really believe in your country, your family, your values, you will wage war to protect them - because there is indeed an Enemy out there and the Enemy, like a host of fallen angels, is out to destroy everything you value. By waging war you'll be redeemed by war's very violence, won't you? The consequences of this are of course terrible: the perpetuation of Power Uber Alles, of war itself, of the assumption that whether we win or lose our submission to Power redeems us.”

“Downing’s Into The Air is that fresh take on the YA post-apocalyptic vision we’ve all been waiting for. Mia Bryn is a wonderful character—one who starts out charmingly mortal but soon becomes the heroine we, and her people, need her to be. Can’t wait for the next Mia chapter!”

Gusto Dave Bruce,

Thanks for approving us as friends.

I’m Gusto Dave Jackson, publicist for Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and I wouldn’t be worth my salt if I didn’t tout our blog and organization. Chiseled in Rock http://chiseledinrock.blogspot.com features side-splitting satire and some flash fiction for intellectual readers.

Today on the Rock: pick up a laugh from the hilarious E.C. STACY, writer of risqué romances and basher of grammar and the overworked comma.

RMFW has several bestselling authors such as NYT Bestseller JEANNE STEIN and J.A. KAZIMER. You have an open invitation to the Rock for contests, entertainment, and an insight to the world of writing! Let’s follow each others’ blogs!
