"Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC of Scarcity Brain.

I've read a number of these brain-hacking books over the years, and while Scarcity Brain had a few things I really liked, overall I did not find it as useful as others.

“Alex is Charlie’s brother, but Charlie isn’t Alex’s brother. How is this possible?”
Danielle Hall, The Challenging Riddle Book for Kids: Fun Brain-Busters for Ages 9–12

“Sarah had discovered that while she liked to ask questions in the hopes that someone or other could answer them, adults liked to ask questions they already knew the answers to. She wasn't sure why exactly that was, and had finally decided that as people grew older, the more important something was the easier it becomes for them to forget. They had to keep asking as a way to help them remember.”
Cat Hellisen, Beastkeeper

Danielle Hall I finished Great today, which Hannah billed to me as "I heard it's a lesbian Great Gatsby"... and it was, and terrible. I suspect that I wouldn't like The Great Gatsby if I reread it today, now that I'm older, and this retelling was awful and poorly written. The protagonist grates with unnecessary explanations, and here is my most favorite. (spoiler if you didn't do your sophomore summer assigned reading, I guess)

She was cold and limp, and even as I lay her down to begin CPR - something I'd learned in health class the previous year - I knew it wasn't going to work.

It's okay, Naomi, I also find it necessary to justify all of my skills, even in moments of crisis.

I'm going to go try something more different: The Other Boleyn Girl.
