BookExpo America 2012

I love meeting bloggers, librarians, booksellers and readers! I got to sign and give away Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) of The Demoness of Waking Dreams at BookExpo America on June 5. Held in New York, BEA is the largest publishing event in North America. To me, it’s a building packed full of kindred spirits.

The Harlequin booth was buzzing during “Paranormal Hour,” which included Heather Graham, Maggie Shayne, Maria Snyder, Rachel Vincent and me.  The experience of signing with some of my all-time favorite authors was amazing.  These women have given me so much inspiration and shown me so much kindness – I felt truly privileged to be included among them!

Cover Reveal: The Demoness of Waking Dreams

Here it is!!  The cover of book #2 in the "Company of Angels" trilogy!!

I can't thank the art department at Harlequin MIRA enough.  They have spoiled me beyond belief by creating such gorgeous cover art for these books.

Here's the description of the book:

Come, sleep.  Come, dreams.  Come, darkness.
Ex-cop Brandon Clarkson is an angel with an edge.  His tough exterior is the perfect camouflage for his job: hunting down the most dangerous criminals on earth.  A self-reliant and demanding lone wolf, Brandon is the ideal angel to track and capture demoness Luciana Rossetti.
Beneath the surface of Luciana's cool, green-eyed beauty lurks the heart of a malevolent killer.  In the winding streets of Venice, she lures him into her dark world of pleasure.
They are perfectly matched.  Angel and demon.  Man and woman.  But only one can win the battle of wills, of strength and of desire.

Book #2, and Theodore Roethke’s ‘In a Dark Time’

I just finished the final revisions on The Demoness of Waking Dreams, book #2 in the ‘Company of Angels’ series and sent the completed manuscript in yesterday to my editor.  The book will be released in September.  I’m so excited about this book – I put a lot into it and I hope readers will enjoy it!

Still walking around feeling a bit stunned and at a loss for words – I feel like all the words I had got sucked into that novel.

While I regenerate, here’s a poem by American poet Theodore Roethke (1908-1963) that has been on my mind lately.  Along with a picture of an eye that could belong to Luciana (the star of book #2 – you might remember her from book #1).  I love Luciana – she’s such a bad girl and so much fun to write.

In a Dark Time

In a dark time, the eye begins to see,

I meet my shadow in the deepening shade;

I hear my echo in the echoing wood–

A lord of nature weeping to a tree,

I live between the heron and the wren,

Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den.

What’s madness but nobility of soul

At odds with circumstance? The day’s on fire!

I know the purity of pure despair,

My shadow pinned against a sweating wall,

That place among the rocks–is it a cave,

Or winding path? The edge is what I have.

A steady storm of correspondences!

A night flowing with birds, a ragged moon,

And in broad day the midnight come again!

A man goes far to find out what he is–

Death of the self in a long, tearless night,

All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.

My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,

Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?

A fallen man, I climb out of my fear.

The mind enters itself, and God the mind,

And one is One, free in the tearing wind.

Maggie Shayne’s Twilight Fulfilled

Yesterday was the release day for Maggie Shayne’s Twilight Fulfilled, the glorious finale to her “Wings in the Night” series!  As a longtime reader and fan of Maggie’s, I can’t wait to dive into this one!  For those of you who don’t know, Maggie started writing “Twilight” vampires long before (ahem) others.

Here’s the blurb:

Utanapishtim has paid dearly for the sin of creating the vampire race—imprisoned in a living death for centuries, driven to near madness. With a single white-hot glance, he immolates his descendants…and the vampire Armageddon begins.

Beautiful and deadly Brigit Poe, not wholly vampire but fiercely loyal to that shared bloodline, is called into action. She abhors yet cannot deny her destiny: to vanquish the once-great king of the immortals and save the vampire race.

Two warriors, equally matched in power and determination, are soon locked in an unwinnable battle, only to discover a passion so shocking it threatens every truth they’ve ever known—even as they must face one final battle that seems fated to end in death and heartbreak for them both.
