Christophe Van Gerrewey studeerde eerst architectuur aan de Gentse Universiteit.

Hij kon niet direct na zijn studie architectuur fulltime aan de slag als onderzoeker of criticus. In afwachting rondde hij in Leuven nog een studie literatuurwetenschappen af, die bepalend is geweest voor zijn houding ten opzichte van architectuurkritiek.

Volgens hem kent de literatuurstudie concepten die ook in de architectuurkritiek bruikbaar zijn. “Roland Barthes heeft onder andere het concept ‘dood van de auteur’ geïntroduceerd, wat betekent dat je geen rekening houdt met de intenties van de auteur van een tekst.
