Winona Kent is an award-winning author who was born in London, England and grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she completed her BA in English at the University of Regina. After moving to Vancouver, she graduated from UBC with an MFA in Creative Writing, and a diploma in Writing for Screen and TV from Vancouver Film School.

Winona's writing breakthrough came many years ago when she won First Prize in the Flare Magazine Fiction Contest with her short story about an all-night radio newsman, “Tower of Power”.

Her debut novel Skywatcher was a finalist in the Seal Books First Novel Award and was published by Bantam Books in 1989. This was followed by a sequel, The Cilla Rose Affair, and her first mystery, Cold Play, set aboard a cruise ship in

But if I'm ever in doubt, I always leave the last thing I've written a bit unfinished, with careful notes about what I want to come next. That way I always have something to work on and somewhere to go with the story the next time I'm sitting down at the computer. For true writer's block, I recommend what I learned at film school: sit down with a blank piece of paper and write out whatever is at the top of your head. It doesn't matter if it's utter nonsense. Just freeflow the writing and keep it up for two minutes, even if it's the word "nothing" written 100 times. It'll free your mind and you'll be surprised how it'll get you writing again.(less)

80th Anniversary of the Balham Underground bombing

Balham Underground Station was one of the many deep level tube stations where people sheltered during the Blitz in World War 2.





On the night of October 14, 1940, at 8.02 pm, a 1400 kg semi-armour piercing fragmentation bomb fell onto the road just above the northern end of the platform tunnels. It created a large crater, severing water and sewer lines, and the ceiling of the northbound tunnel below
