Comment on Can’t Contemporary Worship Value Authenticity and Dignity? by nicole
There are times when I want the ‘old music and all the high drama’- basically the high holidays, like Christmas and Easter. But we belong to a new Anglican church (aka the upstarts) and we search for the middle ground in our services- we have the older episcopal hymns that we all love (and know the words to) that produce the resounding joy you speak of, in all who sing, but when you see a child singing a newer worship song (like ‘Awesome God’- really all of Chris Tomlin’s songs) with everything they have and you can just SEE their love for God coming thru their singing, it gives you pause.
At my daughters kindergarten grad the classes sang “Glorious Day” (Casting Crowns version) and there were NO dry eyes in the house- not because it was our children singing, but of their LOVE for Christ and their faith that resounded from their singing. So yes, I HAVE seen the transcendence that CAN occur- but it takes the right circumstances.
