I read this on a long bus ride. It was a short book, and quite repetitive, so really not much there. Interesting that Tolstoy was ex-communicated from the orthodox church for so little. My takeaways included that Leo was clearly classist and sexist. ...more

The best thing about this book was the descriptions of the atmosphere of Penang in the early 1900's. What a wonderful place and time, described beautifully with lots of interesting cultural context including words from various relevant dialects. The ...more
