This was such a fun, dark, kinky little ride. Honestly, I had a good time with it overall, and I think the biggest strength of this book was how unapologetically eccentric it was. It fully leaned into its weirdness, its intensity, and its darker elements, and I appreciated that it never tried to tone itself down or pretend to be something it wasn’t.

That being said, I did struggle a bit with the writing style. It just wasn’t entirely my thing. At times, it read more like someone’s very specific fantasy or fanfic scenario rather than a fully polished story with strong narrative depth. And listen — I’m absolutely not against that. Sometimes those stories are wildly entertaining. But as a reader, I personally wanted a little more substance in the storytelling itself and stronger execution in how certain scenes unfolded.

I think the biggest issue for me was that some situations felt engineered purely to get the characters from point A to point B emotionally or sexually, rather than happening naturally within the story. You could tell the author had a very specific scene or dynamic in mind — and often the actual idea behind it was good — but the setup leading to those moments sometimes didn’t feel believable or fully fleshed out. Especially in the beginning and middle portion, the writing lacked a bit of strength and fluidity in that regard.

Still, despite those issues, I genuinely had fun reading it. It was entertaining, bold, and definitely memorable.

My one major ick, though, was the period blood scene. I completely understand the intention behind it — normalizing periods and showing that they’re natural and nothing to be ashamed of. I fully agree with that message. But personally, I really did not need the MMC explicitly going down on the FMC during her period to get that point across. We can acknowledge periods are normal without making me read that in graphic detail. That was definitely where the book lost me a little.

I never think it’s fair to rate a dark romance poorly simply because it’s dark. If those themes offend you, then the genre probably just isn’t for you. My issues with this book had nothing to do with the darkness itself and everything to do with the execution.

The biggest problem for me was the writing style. The plot twist was painfully obvious from very early on, and there were so many plot holes that it became difficult to stay immersed in the story. But more than anything, the characterization felt incredibly inconsistent. The characters would say or do things completely out of left field that didn’t align with the personalities the book had already established for them. It felt less like layered complexity and more like the characters changed depending on what the scene needed at that moment. Their behavior was all over the place, and because of that, I never felt truly connected to either the characters or the storyline.

Another issue was how unrealistic everything felt. Obviously fiction doesn’t need to mirror real life perfectly, especially not dark romance, but there still has to be some internal logic or believability within the world the author creates. Here, almost nothing felt probable. Every situation felt exaggerated to the point where it became distracting rather than immersive.

I also struggled with the repetitive phrasing throughout the book. It made the writing feel underdeveloped, almost like reading fanfiction rather than a fully polished novel. If this was one of the author’s earlier works, then I can empathize with that because every writer grows over time, but it was still something that heavily affected my reading experience.

One more thing that really didn’t work for me was the way trauma was handled. It felt like the characters were given every traumatic experience imaginable purely to justify their behavior, rather than the trauma being explored in a nuanced or believable way. Instead of adding depth, it started to feel like trauma dumping for shock value, and eventually it lost emotional impact because of how excessive it became.

That being said, if you’re not a dark romance reader, this book is absolutely not for you. Read your trigger warnings before going in because even within the genre, this one is very graphic and very dark. ...more
